Rusty exhaust tips

I returned from our friends over the weekend (where it typically rained) and parked the car in the garage as usual. Two days later I noticed that the exhaust tips had signs of rust, visable from at least 10 feet away. 20 mintues later I had them shining again.
Why not use stainless steel. This never happened to the BMW.

The entire exhaust on my 997 S (headers, pipes, tips, mufflers etc.) IS stainless steel.

It's not, strictly speaking, rust. It's what happens to SS when it loses it's molecule-thick layer of oxygen. All you have to do is use a SS cleaner and it will look good as new. Go to a marine/boating store and get some SS "polish." Since it's basically just a chemical reaction, it doesn't require much effort to get the shine back.

I'll post some pics the next time it happens. Trust me, it was light rust. If i'd left it for a month or so it would have been perm. sure of it.

As others have said, they are stainless steel. Stainless steel does not always live up to its English name.

I think it is particularly prone to discoloring if subjected to high temperatures in wet and dirty conditions.

Your BMW's exhaust tailpipes would not have got as hot as those of your Porsche because the former are much further from the engine than the latter.

THAT could be the result of a weld. It's hard to fully shield the metal during welding so parts of the weld get oxidized and lose their "stainless" qualities.

Probably not "permanent" since there's a good chance a light grinding and a good polish will reveal good (stable) metal.

Go over it with a toothbrush (then a SS wire brush if necessary) and the SS cleaner/polish from a marine store: it works wonders. Stuff called "Seapower" is the best, with "Flitz" coming in second, IMO, of course.

Only use bronze, or SS wire brushes as a last resort (before grinding/polishing) on SS. NEVER use a _steel_ wire brush: will be a "rust" nightmare in weeks following!

Actually, Porsche has designed the tips in such a way that they are letting in cool slip-stream air in with the exhaust gases. That way the tips themselves stay relatively cool. The just don't get that hot.
