Re: 2011 Malaysian F1 Grand Prix in Sepang

    @ Atzporsche,

Alonso will be in the running for this years championship. He would have been right up there today if it was not for his collision..

    Carlos from Spain:
    throt:

I think SV will not have it all his own way this season. Alonso and co are showing good race pace alot earlier this season.

Going to be interesting in China next week with its straights which will be good for Alonso, Massa, Hamilton and last years winner Button...

Lets hope!  The problem I see is that pole position is half of the race, and SV car is like an F1 amongst GP2 cars so at the beginning of the race he takes off with an open road while everybody else looses time fighting and defending each other, and he comfortably manages his lead until the checkered flag. The championship could not be easier if things don't change and the other drivers don't get to play with the same car performance SV gets.

Unless one of the teams is able to match the RB in qualifying I'm afraid he will rack a bit enough lead in points that would take a mayor disaster by RB to loose the championship. At least the McLarens are showing a lot of improvement so Hamilton may put some pressure.

The Ferrari's seem to have a good race pace but do so horribly  poor in qualifying that they can't use it during the race. The Renaults are a big surprise this season, unfortunately they don't have good enough driver's that can take advantage of it.

I agree, Carlos but the RB did not have it all there own way last year, or should I say Vettel didn't Smiley..

Re: 2011 Malaysian F1 Grand Prix in Sepang

A good drive from Vettel to finish first with a KERS system that wasn't functioning. Quite an interesting race but I enjoyed the drama of qualification more this time.

Well done Button, Heidfeld, Kobayashi & Di Resta

    Whoopsy:

Carlos, yes I still think that's a rookie mistake, even at 300km/h, he should be able to know WHERE his car's nose is.

I actually think his eyes wasn't even looking up, he might be checking the gauge, KERS level perhaps and when he look back up he got too close.

From the overhead camera angle, Alonso's Ferrari already had a superior speed advantage, he can pull out to pass quite a bit earlier instead of getting so close.

If they were parallel parking a car yes, but with two cars changing directions at 300km/h any speed change causes that smal gap to change instantly and the nose will meet the rear as the lines straighten after the curve, he knew it could happen, there was a risk while being so close he gambled and lost, but he took the risk since he had no other way to pass him, without the rear wing mechanism there is no way he could pass in the straight.

That type of collision happens all year around to all drivers, there is no amount of experience that could have avoided that, the only way was to stay further behind and not pass, and he knowingly took the risk to try to pass.

Its happened to Hamilton several times before because he is so agressive in overtaking, and IMO the best overtaker in the current grid, but that comes with a price of also being involved in those types of accidents more often, as we saw last season. Its not a rookie "I didn't know that could happen mistake". Still a mistake though.

Good point!  that raises my hopes for next GP China Smiley 10 Smiley 4

And we don't have to wait for the race, we will know on saturday qualifying.

Re: 2011 Malaysian F1 Grand Prix in Sepang

Carlos, Alonso already HAD the superior closing speed on Hamilton, it was very clear from the overhead camera angle, he could have pulled out a lot earlier and still make the pass with room to spare, Hamilton was a sitting duck, almost like stationary compared with Alonso's closing speed. Alonso doesn't NEED his passing wing to pass at that point in time.

Just from camera footage it's almost like Alonso FORGOT to pull out to pass until it was too late.

See if you can find a replay of that footage and go over it again.

Re: 2011 Malaysian F1 Grand Prix in Sepang

You can't judge that from TV, and you saw what happened on the previous straight as proof, Alonso had more grip and closed on Hamilton on BRAKING, and in fact you could see how he took different lines in all the previous corners in and out of the curves in order to come up behind Ham very close to him and with inertia to try to pass out of the corner, but Ham defended very well.

With the rear wing he would have blow passed Ham at the straight, but since he couldn't he had to try it this way and the risk was that coming out so close you could clip the front wing and that is what happened. Do you think Alonso "forgot" to pull out on the straight? or that he would take such a risk in overtaking if he could just blow by cleanly in the next home straight? Did you hear Alonso's word's on the matter? wonder if it were any other driver you would be thinking the same thing.

I'm not saying that Alonso did not make a mistake or did no wrong, he made a mistake and I'm sure he knows you are only allowed 2 or 3 in the season if you want to be championship material, but I'm just saying that it wasn's a simple rookie mistake.

Mistake is mistake... It's F1 after all.. He really needs to start winning or he is done, quite simple as that.

Re: 2011 Malaysian F1 Grand Prix in Sepang

I agree with you Carlos but on the other hand Alonso's mistake was IMO generated by frustration. He was annoyed because of the DRS malfunction. The blood was "boiling" Smiley "Head cooling" was off Smiley I hope in the future he will learn to keep it under control.
