Is the 997 just an 'interim' series?

Just wondering...as the 997 is barely 2 years old, nearly all the variants have been released apart from GT3 RS and GT2. With RC confirming the RS out later this year this only leaves the GT2 details yet to be released. One wonders how long the 997 will run until the 998 rolls around?

I get the impression in the pursuit of chasing the $$$ as quickly as possible by releasing all models in double quick time, it doesn't really leave much all left in the development left in the 997 series - unless you discount the inevitable facelifts and 10-15hp incremental 'upgrades'...

Not again, not again, not again...

Please, guys: check the archive. This has been discussed several times, even since DAY 1 when the 997 showed up and some people started to state those ridiculous claims about a 998, etc.

There are various reasons why Porsche already put so many variants of the 997 on the market (remember: the 997 Turbo and 997 GT3 haven't been delivered to customers yet!):
    1. competition got tougher and Porsche doesn't want to loose customers
    2. winning new(old) customers
    3. production cost has been reduced, offering more variants is easier now...and cheaper
    4. Cayenne sales have slowed down and the facelift seems still to be more than a year away
    5. Porsche soon needs more engineering/development capacity for the upcoming new Panamera
    6. 997 Carrera/S seems to be a bigger success than 996 but still not the success Porsche has hoped for
    7. Cayman not as succesful as hoped for?
    8. Customers want more bang for their bucks

    I could continue...

Right now, there is no room for a 998. We should expect the 997 facelift sometimes around 2007/2008 and we don't expect a completely new 911 (998?) before 2010 since 2009 seems to be the year of the Panamera.

To reply to your question: no, the 997 has never been an "interim" series, this is just a theory some people made up who don't have the slightiest clue about Porsche 911 history, model policy and tradition.

Well apologies but some may have joined these boards after the 997 introduction.

So you're implying 'I' don't have a clue? Gotta love your attitude man...this is not an elitist board where you're likely to get flamed for asking a question. Freedom of speech after all.

Can't handle that? You can delete away this member here.

    Ever heard of "search"?

It pays not to be lazy. Why don't you do your homework before you say something?

Look to the right of "Main Index" and you might do something useful before you begin mouthing off.

    Re: Ever heard of "search"?

So what's the limit for asking the same question? How much time should pass before asking the same question? Maybe these should be posted on the board rules?

    Re: Ever heard of "search"?

Aw, C'mon guys. We're having an interactive thing here. The search function is interesting/informative to a point.

Having a conversation is more fun and more efficient.

Plus look at the traffic here. Maybe only RC knows but I guess, There's new guys, lurkers, guys that have disappeared, so the topics are only repetitive to the few (?) of us who've been here a while.

Besides I like being able to help people. hey, once in a while they even express their gratitude! Good feeling that.

    Re: Ever heard of "search"?

Agree with MMD, if people can't ask a question (with good intentions of course) then there is very little reason to even have interactive forums. You might as well buy a magazine, read it and use it as gospel until proven otherwise.

Having said that, Lavaman, I am sure that RC did not intend his post to sound arrogant or condescending. In fact, he's genuinely very warm (he's German too! ) and goes out of his way to help people with their queries no matter how silly they may appear.

    Re: Ever heard of "search"?

    Agree!

Ask away, but try to do a search 1st.
No worries, we're just exchanging info, chatting and sharing our love for Porsches here!
