According to official Porsche sources, Cayman S Nordschleife

The Cayman S with PASM is 12 seconds slowlier than a 997 Carrera S with 20 mm chassis on the Nuerburgring Nordschleife. I hope this answers some of the questions...and finally finishes with those funny rumors. I wonder how nobody came up with the idea that the Cayman S is actually outrunning a GT3.
The "official" time is 8:11 min (Carrera S: 7:59 min).

We're not talking about SPORT AUTO test results (Carrera S: 8:05 min) but internal Porsche testing done by people who develop these cars.

And: 8:11 min is pretty fast if you ask me. I'd say that Horst v. Saurma (SPORT AUTO) should be able to do a 8:15 time if he is in a good mood.

Re: According to official Porsche sources, Cayman S Nordschleife

I seem to remember that the Cayman S is supposedly faster at the Ring than the 997 (non-S) with std (non-PASM)suspension. Do you know that time?

    Thanks

Re: According to official Porsche sources, Cayman S Nordschleife

    997 is 8.15

Yup, Walter Rohl set those times. However, Nordschleife as we all know is full of "straights" where a more powerful car will do well (I know, I go "there" often...on Playstation GT4 that is ). On a tighter track, I think the Cayman may have an edge. Anyway, I will be very interested to see how the Cayman performs with the Euro sports tune (20mm drop) setting compared to the 911S . RC, is it not true that a 911 S with the Euro sports tune is faster than a 911 S with PASM around the ring?

According to Walter Rohl, Cayman S does it in 8m 11s, which is 7 secs faster than a Boxster S but 4 secs slower than a 911. I am assuming that he is comparing cars with the same spec (with PASM).
    Thanks

Whoops, stuffed up the last reply. This is what I said:

Re: According to official Porsche sources, Cayman S Nordschleife

Don't we all agree that 4 or 7 seconds by a professional driver around a 20 km track that takes around 8-9 minutes to lap is absolutely meaningless?

I'm overstating it - it's not meaningless, but you catch my drift - these are very very very small differences.

Re: According to official Porsche sources, Cayman S Nordschleife

Agreed. For superb track junkies that may mean something. But to most people it will come down to "hardtop vs roadster."

It's funny how on the mini brouchure (nothing that hasn't been seen before) they go out of their way to not even mention that it has a boxer engine, never mind that it is mostly a Boxster. The keep saying "horizontally-opposed flat six" time and time again lest someone may get the impression that this "new" car is in any way related to a Boxster. Funny. It's so obvious.

I think if it is the same driver and the times are fairly repeatable then it means something.. but different drivers, or one or two laps only, it doesnt mean that much.

I'd say that the Cayman's handling is even better than the Boxster's. Left aside the "new" Michelin tyres - which should make their way on the other models as well in a short while - the more rigid hardtop chassis as well as the stiffer suspension should make the difference. I don't think that the difference in topspeed between the base 997 and Cayman will make such a big difference, the later should have an edge due to its lower weight.

After all both cars provide some impressive performance - the driving character of these two cars should be quite difference. In terms of numbers they should end up pretty equal!

It's a common misconception that weight has any bearing on top speed. Top speed is largely controlled by power, gearing, rolling resistance and aero drag. Weight is largely inconsequential, although a heavier car will take longer to reach its (same) top speed...

    Indeed.

I personally don't care much for top speeds though. Once over 150mph, it really gets pretty crazy and largely inconsequential. More important is how quickly you get there.

Agreed, again. My track car is geared to redline at 139mph in top gear, even though it's capable of much higher speeds. I chose acceleration too

    What does it mean then??

I'd take it to mean that these cars are remarkably similar actually. Yet they will undoubtedly drive quite differently. What I'm getting at is that these 1% differences are not going to be perceptible to us "mortals" and won't influence our decisions. We will be influenced by hardtop vs convertible, our personal driving experiences, the concept of driving an "icon" versus the "new kid on the block".

The 5 sec (or so) 'Ring time difference between a 997S in SPort mode and a 997S with a -20 mm LSD suspension has received so much attention. IMO, the #'s suggest that they are extremely similar in performance, so the experience, ride etc. are what should really be influencing our decisions.

Performance-wise, I'm struck by how similar these cars all are when they're quantitatively compared like this.
