    997 Carrera (not S) Test in Auto Zeitung

    Things are getting weird, pretty weird.
    German car magazine Auto Zeitung tested the new 997 Carrera (not S!) from 0-100 kph in 4.8 seconds and, now hold your breath, from 0-200 kph (125 mph) in 16.5 seconds. Practically the same performance figure as on the 997 Carrera S. I'm not sure what is going on because a 997 Carrera tested in Auto, Motor und Sport did 0-200 kph (125 mph) in 18.1 seconds.

    I recently talked to an engineer close to development and he told me that the new 997 Carrera S M97/01 engine gains a bit of power at around 10000 km and over. But this still doesn't explain the difference of 1.6 seconds from 0-200 kph (125 mph) for the 997 Carrera which actually has the "old" engine.

    BTW: 0-160 kph (100 mph) acceleration times were 11.4 seconds in the AMS test and impressive 10.5 seconds in the Auto Zeitung test.

    And for those people who make complaints about weight on the 997: the BMW 645 Ci tested along with the 997 Carrera put almost 300(!) kg more on the scale! Same with the tested Maserati Coupe Cambiocorsa.

    Even with the rear axle tramping violently almost all the way through first gear, the Carrera S could be horse-whipped to a 4.1-second 60-mph run and a 12.6-second quarter-mile at 112 mph

    Wasn't this the same magazine who tested the new M5 making 13,9Sec to 200Kph !!!!!!!!!!! I guess their performance figures are a bit optimistic.

    One could argue that the 3.6l engines (on the facelift 996) and now on the 997) have gained a few horses during the production cycle. I remember a test of a late 996 C2 which was going like hell compared to the earlier cars.

    Could also be that the first 3.8l engines are not yet developing their full potential (similar to the Mk1 GT3)

    We can only assume what numbers a 997S would have returned under the same conditions.

    Wasn't the 996 MY 02 tested in "ams" with 16.5 sec from 0-200 km/h ... so why are you surprised ??? Although i must admit that i found it very optimistic too ...

    Some magazine recommends the basic instead of the S model. In the UK it is Pounds8000 difference. Well that's almost US$14000 for not a perceptible performance difference?
