    How much does a 911 engine weight ?

     Can someone tell me how much does a flat6 weight ? I'm asking because I've read an article about the Ruf RGT-8 which has a V8 which supposedly is 40 kilos lighter than the normal engine of the car. Here's the article:

    So how does a V-8 fit in a 911 engine bay? Pretty well, actually. Ruf claims that the engine is only 0.8 inch longer than the current flat-six and that it is an amazing 88 pounds lighter.

     On RUF's site it says that their V8 "weights less than 200 kg", so that means that the 911 engine weights well over 200 kilograms, around 240 which is more than a ferrari V12 !

    204 kg dry weight for Carrera and 230 kg for Turbo. These are the pre-DFI weights but I don't think the new engines will be lighter.

    GT3 I don't know.

    I suspect the DFI engines to be lighter because the new engine block should be made of newer and more advanced materials. Also the "walls" should be thinner...

    There have also fewer parts, for example no Intermediate Shaft.

    The first thing you have to define when talking about engine weights is, what ancillaries are included. This doesn't have to be such things a power assisted steering pump, starter motor or generator, but can be something more fundamental such as the flywheel. 

    Ruf would surely have compared like with like in the instance cited above, but comparing weights quoted for engines by two different companies like Porsche and Ferrari without closer inspection of the content could be misleading.

     Yes but C&D actually quotes RUF: "Ruf claims that the engine is only 0.8 inch longer than the current flat-six and that it is an amazing 88 pounds lighter". And sure it could mean anything but usually when a car maker says their engine weights "under X kg", where X is a rounded figure, it means that probably it isn't much lighter than that. So if the engine weights 164 kg, then they would have said "under 170 kg", not "under 200" I would presume. So I'm guessing the actual weight is between 190 and 200 kg, which is 40 kilos lighter than...a Gt3 engine maybe ? Because now that I think about it I'm pretty sure they're comparing it with the previous RGT engine, which was a GT3 flat6, and not with the standard carrera engine.

    Bugatti Veyron 8.0 V16 turbocharged: 530 kg

    Lamborghini Aventador 6.5 V12: 235 kg

    Audi R8 GT 5.2 V10: 258 kg

    Ferrari 458 4.5 V8: 217 kg

    Ruf RGT-8 4.5 V8: 182 kg

    McLaren MP4-12C 3.8 V8 turbocharged: 199 kg

    Corvette ZR1 6.2 V8 supercharged: 251 kg

    Mercedes CLS63 AMG 5.5 V8 turbocharged: 204 kg

    Porsche 997 GT3 RS 3.8 B6: 183 kg

    BMW 1-series M 3.0 I6 turbocharged: 178 kg

    Audi TT RS 2.5 I5 turbocharged: 183 kg

    Mini JCW 1.6 I4 turbocharged: 116

    Volkswagen Golf R 2.0 I4 turbocharged: 152 kg

    Fiat 500 0.9 I2 turbocharged: 85 kg

    Not sure which components are included, considering the low weight figures of some of these engines I assume they are weighted without peripherals and certainly without gearbox.
