Type of steel used on a 997 body?

I was tapping a 997 body this weekend and noticed it feels really solid. Anyone know if this is a thicker gauge steel than is normally used on regular cars?

Re: Type of steel used on a 997 body?

Anyone? Jim dont you know this?

Re: Type of steel used on a 997 body?

Don't know the exact gauge of steel, but I agree that P's have a great feel of solidity....arguably one of the safest cars in the world from both an active and passive standpoint. A noticeable recent change though is the lightness of the 997S' aluminum hood vs the heavier ?steel version on the 996TTS.....

Re: Type of steel used on a 997 body?

I dont know what gauge the steel is. And the body shell uses different combinations of steel in some areas. The 997 does have a stiffer shell than the 996 so they certainly did somnething to improve it over the 996.

The gauge and strength of the steel used varies according to the function of the particular part concerned, and the loads it is likely to be subjected to in fufilling that function. Computer-aided engineering software now allows the stresses even in complex body structures to be calculated with a good degree of accuracy.
For a part of the crash structure a high grade steel in the appropriate thickness and shape to enable controlled crushing in an accident is called for. A hood, which primarily just needs to protect your luggage and has no structural function, can be made of aluminum to reduce weight.

fritz, I sometimes carry some good "grape juice" in my P's trunk.....thus I was troubled by the 997S' lighter hood As always, thx for a logical explanation
