    Re: 997 C4S vs R8 by 5th Gear

Determined performance by Carrera 4S on drag race

    Re: 997 C4S vs R8 by 5th Gear

I bet a C2S with a powerkit would've had better lap times, especially if the driver aimed to slide around less and carve a nice line. Those guys were over driving and could have been much more smooth. A C2S would be lighter, and able to turn in just a little better as well as acelerate out of the turns a little bit better (earlier and more throttle before understeer). Given what appeared to otherwise be great traction conditions, the AWD would offer no significant benefit in the straights.

I also reckon that a GT3 could be had for similar money and offer a significant performance jump.

While I haven't driven an R8, this remains, for me, a no brainer: 911

The Corvette, Aston, R8 etc are all doing a good job advertising for Porsche!

    Re: 997 C4S vs R8 by 5th Gear

For all the ones who doubt our 911's performance, read the GT Purely Porsche issue in which they compare a 997 Turbo with a GT3 RS, a GT3 and a Powerkit C2S and you'll see how, if a C4S is even with the R8 - according to the video - it's obvious the Powerkit C2S, GT3, GT3 RS and Turbo would blow its doors off! By the way, I am the proud owner of a 2006 Powerkit Carrera S with the Aerokit Cup also and was very pleased to know that, for a road car, it does very well againts a GT3 or GT3 RS's on track performance specially when the C2S tested had standard steel brakes and Michelin Pilot Sport tires, unlike the GT3 and GT3 RS which ran with Michelin Pilot Sport Cups and PCCBs! Also, the C2S did not have the Europe only option of a limited slip differential and sport suspension which would even the odds more. Now, what do you guys think? I know the GTs and the Turbo have a better engine and I wish my Carrera S had a GT1 derived engine instead of an M97 but, for all practical purposes, I think it is a car that is definitely worthy of respect! Finally, the Powerkit Carrera's straight line performance, up to 100 mph, is virtually identical to the GT3 and GT3 RS. Not bad at all!

    cibergypsy,

    Congrats on 997X51, brother!

I would also be interested to find out how close our cars equipped with PCCB and cup tires are in comparison with a GT3. Don't think any magazine will do it as the result may upset most GT3 owners.

I agree with you! I think the results would surprise some GT3 owners. By that, I don't mean to say there is no point in a GT3 - far from it. I think it appeals to owners who will use it on a track environment often and will take advantage of the adjustability of its suspension and all the other advantages they found on the article in GTPP, besides the possibility of its engine being more reliable or suited to prolongued track use without affecting it adversely. Even though the cars, as they come out of the factory, seem to be more evenly matched than I thought, one could subsequently set a GT3 up to suit one's driving style and not be tied to just having it the way Porsche set it up. As for me, since I don't intend to track my Carrera S and, dare I say it, need the rear seats also, the way my car is set up more than suits me.

    Re: 997 C4S vs R8 by 5th Gear

I own a 997, test drove an R8 last week. apart from brakes R8 was better im afraid although mine is just standard 997 so not comparing like for like I suppose.

    Re: 997 C4S vs R8 by 5th Gear

The R8 is hugely capable, inspiring confidence for less competent drivers like me to drive it quicker through high speed bends. IMO, Porsche would need to put a bigger engine in the Cayman to compete.

I dont care much about which is quicker. My question is which is the most fun to own. I've booked a second drive in the R8 next week and will try for a Cayman S test drive same day.

love to hear your feedback Panther...

    Re: 997 C4S vs R8 by 5th Gear

I'm booked in for next Thursday morning. I have some great windy B roads in mind for the test.

    Re: 997 C4S vs R8 by 5th Gear

I saw an R8 last week. A very nice looking sports car. It would be on my list, except it has no rear seats for the kids.

For some of us family guys, there is no replacement for the 911. The 911 is versatile and sporty. There will always be cars that are fasters, sexier, newer and subjectivly better. But, at least for me, I want my boys and wife to enjoy the car with me. There is just no substitue for the 911.

Maybe when I am actually an Old man and have no kids it will become an option. But as a middle aged family man, the 911 is simply the best sports car on the market.
