Splinter: you have to see it to believe it

Joe Harmon, then North Carolina industrial design student, was working on a graduation project that was initially inspired by World War II era all-wood aircraft like the de Havilland Mosquito - raised the question, 'Why not a wooden car?'

He ended up with Splinter, a mid-engined, all wood-laminate monocoque with a target weight of 2500lbs and a power goal of over 600 horsepower. To compliment his idea is a fantastic site that allows you to poke around every nook and cranny of the design. I think thorough describes it, at the least. I am impressed by the attention to detail.

    holy crap

Re: Splinter: you have to see it to believe it

And what happens when there is a fire?

Re: Splinter: you have to see it to believe it

or just if you do some burnouts

Re: Splinter: you have to see it to believe it

When it catches fire... you run like heck.

Re: Splinter: you have to see it to believe it

how strong is wood for this application?how would it cope in rain, snow, hot humid days, cold dry days.

the car would warp on its own, wouldnt it?

Re: Splinter: you have to see it to believe it

The wood is quite strong, the Morgan Aero cars are build on wood chassis, or better the chassis has wood elements. But this .... well I don't know just for looking to the level of finish... it makes me a little scared....

Re: Splinter: you have to see it to believe it

Build it? Absolutely! Strong? Absolutely! One of the first "composite" chassis in F1 was constructed by McLaren in the 1960's. It utilized a material called "malite", which is end grain balsa sandwiched between two sheets of aluminum. Very innovative for the time in F1, the material had been used in boat building for some time. The resulting chassis was quite stronger than the conventional aluminum monocoupe of the period.

Re: Splinter: you have to see it to believe it

The mentioned DeHavilland Mosquito was built as a composite structure, not unlike Glas-Fibre Reinforced Plastic, Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastic and Hybrid composites like Glare. It was built out of layers of plywood, really strong and really light. I think a wooden car is a really nice idea with two giant BUT's:
    * Like Lambormina states, wood is an organic material, reacting quite strong to especially moist. One would have to seal all "open" ends to prevent water ingress.
    * Being a natural material, (as opposed to machined metal parts), you can not garantee a part of wood to have a certain strength, there's always flaws in it, every part differing from the same part on another car. How are they going to certify these cars? I think modern law does not leave any ways to make such a car legal?

Re: Splinter: you have to see it to believe it

In addition to that, I love wood for the loks of it, the smell, and as a material to work with... I'd love to have that car, it's going to be beautifull!

Here is a picture of the Mosquito: image

Joost, I do not think the team will build more than one of these. But yes, I would love to see it up in person to experience the car in the flesh as well. I am building some furniture for a prototype contest but nothing on the level of this.

Re: Splinter: you have to see it to believe it

Yeah, the mosquito is amazing. I thought it was powered with the same merlin's as the spitfire. It has been used for a lot of taskes, most of them reconnaisence (spelling?), pathfinders and light bombers. Most amazing is that it was one of the faster planes of that time, most hunter planes had trouble keeping up with a mosquito at full speed. At leas that's what I recall.
