    Re: Jaguar F type coupe

As for the Jag hatching a manual shifter, it wouldn't make much sense. The car is too heavy. It would suffer with a manual gearbox. The V8 has a lot of torque, its a heavy beast, the cars weight transfer and vehicle momentum with a slower shifting manual probably would make it a lot slower.

Modern 911s need the 7spd PDK to keep the low torque Zuffenhausen Hamster Wheel going. With its burden of heavy wheels and tires, big brakes, emission strangled motor and safetyized heavy weight body it needs 7 gears interfaced with its engines management system.

Porsche could easily build a very happy 2100lb 400hp 911 with a 6spd manual if the company didn't have to face worldwide safety and emission laws and worry about customers not being able to order massaging seats and heavy climate control systems.

    Great post :-)

Jags haven't had manual boxes for years now..

I really don't see why any Jag buyer would want an auto. When I'm old enough to want one, I can't see me being fussed about using my left leg....

CHRIS HARRIS VIDEO: JAGUAR F-TYPE COUPE...

Having driven the protoype, Monkey gets his hands on the real thing; does it deliver?

    (26th March 2014)

Were you aware that Jaguar had launched a new coupe? Amazing how silent the specialist media has been on the subject!

Well, I think we can allow ourselves a small dose of patriotic (Indian funded) joy, because the F Type Coupe R is a corker. There are not many cars of its, er, type I would rather live with on a daily basis. A 991 Turbo is way faster, but which would you rather see as the garage door closed after the journey home? Ian Callum deserves a knighthood for the shape.

Time was limited, so we had to stick with one version, the 5-litre supercharged V8. Many people think that in the convertible, the smaller supercharged V6 is the sweeter package, but I much prefer the big V8 in that and see no reason why you wouldn't want the full 550hp with the hardtop. This is not a delicate sports car, it's a thug.

The circuit, whose name I couldn't remember in the heat-of-battle is called Motorland, in a place called Aragon, two hours south west of Barcelona. The drive there is worth the trip alone; the circuit is possibly the best 'new' venue I've driven. Gradients, fast corners and a downhill, 180mph straight in its most open configuration.

So I likes the F Type Coupe R. We'll back-to-back it with a 991 to see how it fares soon enough, but even if the Porsche has the slight dynamic advantage I suspect it will, I'm not sure it really matters. Some cars feel and look so right, they only need to drive acceptably to work as a package. The F Type Coupe R's talents far exceed that marker. I'll have mine in dark blue please.

    Enjoy the vid...

Thanks and all due credit to Chris Harris!

    Re: Jaguar F type coupe

If I am in the market for a Cayman S, I would most definitely buy this one instead.  It wins hands down.

If I were in a market to buy a 911, the F-type isn't even gonna show up on the radar. The price bracket is quite different.

I had a quick check on the configurators. The Jag pretty much comes fully optioned, not much else to add to the price, a lightly optioned Cayman S is already past the Jag's fully optioned price.

A base base 991 with nothing on it might be around the same price range, but the moment the computer mouse start moving the price just sky rocketed.

I would definitely consider it too (particularly with a manual box and factory delivery in England - don't think they offer that).

    Re: Jaguar F type coupe

Its not really a competitor for the Cayman S. Its real competitor is Corvette. You wont be able to make a Jag do what a Cayman can, ever. Listen to what Chris said - the Jag is more like a Chrysler hot rod than a sports car, the e diff overheats on the road and the track - steering feel is better than a 991 but handling isn't. You might as well just wait for the new Chrysler Barracuda.

    Re: Jaguar F type coupe

When people shop for a Cayman S, they are looking for a European car, so the Corvette, a GM product, is definitely out.

I had a Vette before, but no matter how good it was, it will never be on the same radar as European cars. Domestic cars are and will always be a domestic cars and some people will never buy domestic no matter how good they are.

If one really compares the Vette with the Jag, the Jag wins hands down again, the fit and finish and the material used is night and day.

For some reason, GM refused to pay a little extra to use better grade materials, maybe it's the union's golden parachute sucking up all the money spent.

I think its amazing that Jag has built a 100k F type R coupe that might beat a base Corvette @59K. Here is some Jag/Aston/corvette action at Lord so and so's place. Smiley

    Re: Jaguar F type coupe

This would never get me out of a 991. I am a biased 911 lover. And also pissed at JLR since my order for a Range Rover which I ordered last November for June delivery now won't probably arrive until next January/Feburary since the factory decided to sell the majority of Range Rovers in the US as long wheel base versions only. I don't see any JLR products in my future for a long time if ever now....

Don't understand why people compare it with a Cayman. Could not be more different.

    Re: Jaguar F type coupe

    I have for few days a F-Type V6 with 380 hp.
My very first impressions are as follows:

    - car is in-between Boxster and Carrera - just my feeling - I have never driven a Corvette C7 but I think that the F-type it is something also for Porsche driver
    - as a daily car as good as a Porsche
    - as a track car the V6 no
    - automatic gearbox for daily use OK, not as a PDK but for normal daily use maybe even better
    - quality of car is high - didn´t find anything to complaint - same level as Porsche
    - I don´t like the navi - but this is personal
    - sound system is good
    - sound is very good - very loud
    - traction is far from a Porsche - I could imagine how much the 550 hp version will have problems

I am long time Porsche driver and I have to say I have never thought about buying a Boxster or Cayman but I could imagine a F-type coupé. I would for sure take the V8 engine and coupé. As I have read the coupé is much more stiffer and they have much better traction.

    Re: Jaguar F type coupe

Why are Boxster/Cayman so devalued in the eyes of even Porsche fans? It needs some sociological explanation because they are top sports cars. Perhaps, it is due to the original 986's humble 204 HP engine and feeble performance or the shadow of the 911? I don't know!

The Jaguar coupe, I've only seen in the motor show, but I see a few roadsters (black, white and red) and they don't look anywhere as good or as expensive as the 981.

    A matter of personal taste!

Maybe I should say, that the last generation of Boxster/Cayman is much more attractive to me and I think to a lot of 911 owners.

I don´t like the Boxster because I get a claustrophobic feeling inside. The cayman is much better but still not open as a 911 is. The other thing is that the interior is less attractive compared to a 911, which isn´t the best interior at all. The 911 has more power.

Talking about sociological explanation, maybe it is - but a Boxster is somehow a car for women and Cayman for younger  People.

Was it the RCZ-R? 270hp from 1.6 turbo!

This one has a better power/weight ratio than the basic Cayman and it is generally very well sorted in terms of traction and torque steer.

Its main drawback is that on other than perfect road surfaces it is unyielding, with short-travel bumpy ride that is not grippy or acceptable everywhere. I wouldn't be surprised that it was at its best on a smooth track.

    Re: Jaguar F type coupe

I've just caught up with the CH video, which is right up ot his usual standard.  But he puts the boot into the 991 a bit doesn't he - can't wait to see the comparison between the two.  Looks are obviously subjective but I think the coupe is stunning, especially the rear and I'm quite tempted to try one.  I never thought I'd be wondering where my nearest Jaguar dealer is.

    Re: Jaguar F type coupe

I agree and having driven the F-type roadster last year, I am looking forward to giving the coupe a try.  The problem with the 991 that Harris alludes to but does not articulate is that Porsche made the new car to appeal to too broad of an audience.  A sports car can not be all things to all people.

    Re: Jaguar F type coupe

There was a driving impressions comparison in Auto Zeitung, not a full test, of the V6 with the basic Carrera. Price difference 15.000EUR BTW in favour of Jaguar which is 200kg (14%) heavier.

According to them the Jaguar is an attractive full blooded sportscar with aggressive sound and a nice alternative to the 911. However, it cannot quite reach the fantastic precision of the Porsche which offers more feedback from the suspension, steering and brakes.

IMO, the buying decision has to do with styling, the price differential, the 2 seats or the (limited) 2+2, the brand preference and the driving priorities. The 911 is the eternal B road king, whilst something like the Jaguar is a pretty Gran Turismo.

In isolation the Jaguar looks good but looking at the pictures next to the 991, the Porsche is more appealing to me. But I like cars with classic, rounded lines while others prefer more the aggressive look.
