    6 Cars So Alluring

Some cars are so beautifully designed and exquisitely engineered that they transcend mere transportation to become works of art. They are rolling sculptures, and to see them is to think, “That car belongs in a gallery.”

    digg_url ="http://www.wired.com/autopia/2010/03/high-museum-of-art-allure-automobile/";

Curators at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta agree. The museum is hosting an exhibition to celebrate automotive design, and it has gathered a very impressive assortment of cars. The Allure of the Automobile, which opens Sunday and runs through June 20, features 18 vehicles created in what could be called the golden age of design, from the early 1930s through the early 1960s.

The vehicles range from a 1933 Pierce Silver Arrow to a 1961 Ferrari 250 GT. Each is presented in the context of the Art Moderne and Postwar Modernity movements, and they all have a timelessness that goes beyond mere craft to become art.

Take, for example, the 1938 Alfa Romeo 8C2900B Touring Berlinetta shown above. Phil Hill, America’s first world champion driver, said of this car, “If that doesn’t get your heart racing, then you don’t have any blood in you.” Who are we to argue? The Touring Berlinetta exudes strength and refinement and finely shaped design that is hard to equal, let alone surpass.

Now look at the 1961 Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato. An Italian body with a British heart. Sleek, yet muscular; refined, yet designed for the track. Though the design looks simple at first, the longer you look at it, the more you see. Like all good art.

The 1959 Chevrolet Corvette “Bill Mitchell” Stingray prototype is a show car that made it, more or less, into production when the second-generation Corvette rolled out in 1963. Mitchell replaced the legendary Harley Earl as GM’s vp for styling in 1958, and he traded Earl’s bulbous styling for sculpted designs. This car blends the classic lines of European sportscars with the futuristic cues popular among American automakers in the 1950s to create a car that still looks fresh.

Pick just about any Ferrari from the 1950s and ’60s and it’s a stunner. And the 250 SWB (for short wheelbase) Berlinetta is one of the prettiest. The car (this one is a 1961 model) is among the most important GT race cars ever and one of the most beautiful. Styling is often secondary to function in auto racing, but the 250 SWB is an example of form and function coming together in harmony

This is the 1937 Mercedes-Benz 540K Special Roadster. It was Mercedes’ flagship vehicle, and no expense was spared. It perfectly represents the art deco styling of its era, and with a supercharged engine (the “K” stands for “kompressor”), it was as powerful as it was sleek. Even a car as old as a 1937 Mercedes can look thoroughly fresh if it’s designed right, and everything about this car was done right

This little brute is the 1953 Porsche 550 Le Mans/La Carrera Panamerica Coupe, and it has a very impressive racing history. It also has very impressive styling. Although many automakers design cars to look streamlined, the 550 coupe is streamlined. It was designed with an eye toward maximum aerodynamic efficiency. It’s another example of form and function coming together beautifully in a timeless design that can be seen today in the Cayman and Boxster.

UPDATE 8:30 a.m. Eastern, March 20: Many of you are asking why one car or another isn’t listed. The answer is because these are the only photos from the exhibit the High Museum of Art provided to us. Though we agree the Talbot-Lago T150C SS is stunning, it is not included in the exhibit. Don’t ask us why; perhaps the museum couldn’t find anyone willing to loan it one. Here’s a full list of the cars in the exhibit; if there’s something you think should have been included, list it in the comments.

    • 1933 Pierce-Arrow Silver Arrow
    • 1934 Packard Twelve Runabout Speedster

That E-Type was just sooo far ahead of it's time...

E-type is BEAUTIFUL!  There is an immaculate one in my building, and I love it when the owner takes the car cover off.  Also of note is that the owner always has a drip tray under the car.

    Re: 6 Cars So Alluring

As I mentioned in another thread, I got to ride in an E-type 12 cyl many times when I was around 18. It was hunter green with white interior and convertible - white top. That engine sounded great inside the car. And it must have have had a great tourque curve because it could pull from low speed w/o the need to down-shift.

Anyways the E-type was replaced by a 911 which was replaced by a 928 (which is where the desire started for me)

As nice as the E-type was and still are the 928 is even better.

    Re: 6 Cars So Alluring

Ah the E-type, I am in complete opposite with you guys,

Jaguar could have done a better job with the bumpers, they looks like an afterthought glued on by some 14 yr olds. The wheels are horrible, and the window frames needs a much better treatment.

And I don't see an aggressive from air dam nor side skirts, the exhaust needs some work too, and it definitely needs a lot more room for the interior. It could also use more power.

My grandfather left me his 66 E-Type coupe when he died. He knew I don't like that car's design but he said the car will grow on me with time. That was 13 years ago. I have seen it once since, that one time when the lawyer had me signed for it and inspect it. It's been rotting and gathering dust in his garage somewhere in Camden ever since. Maybe in another 30 years I might begin to like it.

An Enzo is miles ahead in styling imo, not to mention performance.

Certainly not my place to suggest you to do things with your inherited E-Type, but its kind of a crime what you're doing with it. I'm no E-Type fan (always thought the way the panels came together made it look like a die-cast model) but surely the thing deserves more respect than to be left to rot? There are tons of enthusiasts out there that would love to care for and enjoy it - I'm just saying...

    Re: 6 Cars So Alluring

You are not the first one, and certainly will not be the last. According to my grandfather, the car already had a mind of it's own when it left the factory, it will run on certain days but absolutely refuse to budge on others, it was offered to my dad but he turned it down based of the fact that Jaguar was supremely unreliable and he much prefer BMW and Mercedes.

Before my own father passed away we had talked about what to do with the Jag, it hadn't run at all since the early 80s, the engine probably had long seized shut, the leather have rotted already from the humid UK weather, but at least the paint should still be ok other than an inch of dust on top. I knew how much it's worth to a collector on something we didn't like, but he insists that I do not sell it because it was from his dad. I didn't have another chance to change his opinion before he died.

Pretty complicated why the car is just sitting there.

You've got to look at the E-type in the context of the era when it was introduced.
In 1962 it competed on the market, includung pricewise, with an upturned bathtub with a 1600cc engine called the Porsche 356.

You can't be serious when you try to compare it with an Enzo?

    Re: 6 Cars So Alluring

That photo I posted yesterday is Steve McQueen standing next to his XKSS, not an E-type like the one in Paris above. Regardless they are both classic's, the E-type with its flowing lines and the more compact SS with its more intense curves.

    Cool

Actually I am when I think of the best looking car ever. It's looks fast even when it's standing still, all the features have a purpose but also well integrated with the overall design theme, nothing ugly stands out.

The 356 looks great in the convertible version, the proportions are bang on, there is a perfect harmony on it's design, every thing just looks 'right'. The coupe however is another story. The E-type had too long a nose, the cab profile is quite weird and the inward curve of the bottom of the bodywork. To put it bluntly I think it looks more like a dildo.

But I do like older styling cars if they are styled properly. Something like that Mercedes 540K, Duesenbergs, etc. They have a presence even when just sitting there, the flowing lines around the fenders, the menacing front end, etc.
