    OT: garage ideas requested

    I am building a new house (actually almost ready to move in) and the garage will have a maintenance pit, which will also function as a stairwell to my workshop in the basement.

    I know, I know - shoulda put in a hydraulic lift instead, but budget overrunns being what they are...

    Anyone out there have a good idea for a metal cover system that would roll open rather than have to lift a cover off? Pit will be 3' wide and 23'4 long...

    I can confirm that 3' wide metal lift-off covers are a PITA. Mine are just standard galvanized grilles as used for cat-walks, cellar vents, etc. To be strong enough to take the weight of a wheel, they also need to be fairly heavy, so prepare for busted nails, fingers, or skinned knuckles!

    Any (semi-)automated roll-open system would surely cost more than a hydraulic lift, because the former would probably have to be custom-made, while you could get the latter in a tried-and-tested standard design from Sears or somewhwere?
