Will Schumacher Ever Return To Glimpses Of HIs Dominate Form?

    Discuss.

Schumi has been consistently beaten by Rossberg and lately has been making uncharacteristic errors.

I know he has consistently said that he cannot get Merc to work with his driving style. Michael's first year back it was complaints about the chassis being too short. This year, it's just the overall package. However Nico has been able to coax it to a point where he near consistently one to three spots ahead either at race conclusion or qualifying.

So, should Michael gracefully bow out and call it quits on a remarkable career, letting the new generation of drivers have their time in the son or should he continue to tough it out with Mercedes.

I cheered for Michael from the first time I ever saw him (at his first F1 race) but coming back was a mistake IMO. Except perhaps if he was in need for some money (which IS possible; many ex-sport stars were very bad at managing their fortunes).

Schumacher is the best F1 driver in history. Statistics prove it.

Unfortunately, Schumacher also proved that you are too old at 40+ years to compete with the 20-30 year old in this high-performance sport. He probably thought otherwise. But who cares - see statement above Smiley

P.S.: In Schumacher's case it is highly unlikely that he is in need of money Smiley

    He shouldn't have come back.

His last three years (if it ever will be three years) of his past-career won't be remembered.

He'll be remembered for his mistake (coming back), as well as for his reckless driving.  I've lost a lot of respect for him because of his dangerous maneuvers.

Re: Will Schumacher Ever Return To Glimpses Of HIs Dominate Form?

It is a fact that Schumi is statistically the most successful and most dominant driver in F1 history. He will be respected for this no matter what he is doing now. One can use this to say he is the "greatest" because his achievements are greater than those of anyone else.

IMvHO he is not the "best" driver ever. IMvHO that was either Juan Manuel Fangio or Jim Clark. It's hard to compare eras but I think they were even better.

As for whether Schumi will ever return to dominate others ... the answer is no. Not just because he does not have the most dominant car - and will not have it since RBR will not sign him - but also because he is now past his best. They say 'form is transitory, class is permanent'. Schumi certainly is a class act and will always remain so. However, time catches up with all of us.

    Just my 2 cents

IMO he's lost at least what he had gained

IMO MS came back for the money. He earned millions but we don't know how much he lost due to the crash of the markets. What we also don't know is how much liquidity he has to support his financial obligations and his family's lifestyle. Definitely the man is very rich but at that level the cash requirements are very different.

As to his reputation as a Champion, he will be one of a handful of F1 names that will be remembered forever. Together with Jim Clark, JYS, Lauda, Prost and Senna. An unsuccessful comeback at the age of 41 doesn't negate his illustrious career.

I have seen him buy  flip-flops at my outlet store. Does that indicate he needs money Smiley

I do not think he is in ned of money. He lives a low profile life around here. He did built in the last year a huge mansion on the lake, but otherwise...not much signs of a crazy lifestyle, exept  a few cars and bikes....

I still admire him for all the accomplishment he did in his career . He was exceptional !

But he  will not be the same as before anymore. It was a mistake to come back .

Flip-flops Smiley It means that he is saving his tiny salary in order to buy his wife expensive shoes.

To be fair he is as good as the Mercedes GP car. The fact that Rosberg is 6 points in front and often one or two slots ahead in qualifying, doesn't mean that MS has lost it. At 41 and after 7 titles you wouldn't struggle to gather a few more points in an uncompetitive car that offers no chance of winning. In Canada when conditions were not straightforward and he could see a chance for distinction, he tried more.

My assumption is that when he signed he expected the dominance of Brawn GP to carry over in Mercedes GP.

There's probably a lot of truth in that assumption.

Re: Will Schumacher Ever Return To Glimpses Of HIs Dominate Form?

^^^Well that was a mistake. Everyone knew Brawn GP was ahead of the curve that year because Honda started developing their 09 car by the 6th race then pulled out of F1 after 75% of the development of the 09 was completed, while Ferrari and McLaren were putting a majority of their development effort into their current cars.

Ross Brawn made a nice penny though. He bought the remnants of Honda for $30MM the sold 75% of it to Mercedes one year later for $100MM.

Re: Will Schumacher Ever Return To Glimpses Of HIs Dominate Form?

As long as someone provides him with a decent car, he just needs to drive. Glad to see the young man still

    going for it.

Re: Will Schumacher Ever Return To Glimpses Of HIs Dominate Form?

I wouldn't write him off either. Not a return to former dominance but a podium finish or two. Does anyone think if he could have traded cars with Vettel, that Vettel would have won? The two dominant constructors are RBR and McLaren.

But again, if Seb and Mark decided, just for grins, to trade cars last week with Jens and Lewis, who would have won? The drivers in the faster cars IMHO ... and that's RBR.
