Porsche Sport Driving School - Fantastic

I just attended Porsche's 2-day Sport Driving School (in Birmingham, AL) and hats off to the Porsche folks. I can't speak highly enough about the PSDS program -- very well organized, lots of brand new P cars (with Carrera and Carrera S for track and skid pad, Cayman and Boxster S on 'autocross' and lane change fun, new Cayenne S for 4-wheeling and Cayenne Turbo S for hot laps around track - yes, a bit wierd to see), extremely skilled "real deal" instructors, the Barber Motorsports facility is absolutely beautiful and, most importantly, a great track (while not Nordschleife, it is really interesting and technical, with lots of elevation, camber and radius changes). It also didn't hurt that we had absolutely fantastic weather - clear skies and temps in the 80s (I got lucky, it had apparently been in the 100+ range for nearly a month and "cooled down" just days before I got there). While perhaps not cheap, it still strikes me like a relative bargain all things considered. I was so impressed, I have already signed up for PSDS 'Masters' program (March 2008). Lastly, I have to extend my thanks to Jason Tang (Atomic80) for his great post of several months back on his experience at Porsche's SDS -- his writeup was the "last straw" for me, after reading it I knew I had to go to Alabama ;-)

Awesome, Tim! I really am happy that you had a good time out there! You'll have even more fun at the Masters because you'll get to spend much more time behind the wheel on the track BY YOURSELF!

Re: Porsche Sport Driving School - Fantastic

if you love the first 2 day, the Masters will be your dream come true

Re: Porsche Sport Driving School - Fantastic

The PDE is great, the masters is better.....but nothing beats solo seat time in your own car on a track!

You may be right, but considering that a number of Porsche's have been totaled here on Pacific Northwest tracks this summer, it seems to me it's a whole lot safer and cost effective to use someone else's car. When someone folds up a GT2 @ $200K it makes a $3500 PSDS class look dirt cheap. The worst that could happen, short of injuring yourself, is you'd be out your deductible and would be asked not to bother to come back.

Track time around here usually means you're driving with cars in various states of repair/maintenance and drivers of different skill levels. At the PSDS your pretty much pitted against a driver with similar skills, the run groups are much smaller and the cars are basically equal and in excellent condition. True, they don't offer a TT to drive, but you develop and hone skills directly related to your own car.

It is also very hard to beat the professional instructors you'll have at these schools.

Re: Porsche Sport Driving School - Fantastic

I guess that's one way to look at it, I've already had mine on the track a few times, and plan to again..

    Chris,
I wonder what you do for insurance. Here we have to sign a waiver absolving all participants, track and the sponsoring club from any liability. Most insurance policies now have language stating no coverage for "racing surfaces" no matter if it's a school or whatever. I know many are just "going bare" with salvage title junkers with the idea of walking away if there is an accident. Easy to do, I guess, with an inexpensive car, but quite another matter in the case of a $100K+ Porsche.

I don't know if they still do it (I haven't taken the PSDS yet, but will soon if I get the free time), but the PSDS (once called the PDE) used to offer a maximum $1,000 or $2,000 liability if you piled one up at the course after having paid an extra $100 or $200. Sounded like a bargain to me. Is that still an option?

Yep, that's still an option. Offered the day you show up.

You can pay in advance as well. $2000 deductible for $200, otherwise it's $20,000 deductible, which is included in the class price. Seems like a no brainer to me.
