    Spring Tires - 20" vs. 18"?

    Anybody have any opinions on the handling differences, merits, pros/cons etc. of 20" wheels vs. 18" wheels? I have 18" Pirelli Scorpion AT's on my Cayenne S right now. A set of 18" Bridgestone Turanzas are in the garage to go back on in late March. I'm considering getting a set of 20" Sport Technos with Michelin Diamaris. My cayenne has air suspension. Thanks in advance for the advice and opinions. (PS. I'm not worried that my Winter tires will be unsafe in the Summer; and, since nobody offered any advice on Roadfly, I'll ask here)

    1. Winter tires are unsafe in the summer, as soon as the outside temperature goes above 15 *C, braking and handling abilities already drop compared to summer tires, not to speak about the excessive tire wear when temperatures rise.
    2. the 20'' Sport Technos with Michelin Diamaris don't really have an advantage, oh well, they look nice and handling might be improved slightly. But you get a stiffer ride (even with air suspension, especially if you locked it to the sport setting) and the tires and rims are much more likely to be damaged even in less rough terrain (if you still want to go a little bit off-road). For street use only, I'd say go for them (I got them too for my Cayenne Turbo) but if you're doing a little off-roading from time to time or if comfort is the main priority to you, you might want to reconsider.

    A little comment regarding 22'' wheels: absolutely not recommended. Besides the fact that 22'' rims are usually (depending on the manufacturer) really heavy and the mounted tires usually aren't always to Porsche safety specs (speed and especially load index!), the damage of a 22'' can happen very often, even when driving on the street only. I've been shocked by the distance from the pavement to the rim when I looked at one of those 22'' rims. You just have to drive through a tiny pothole and you already damage your rim and maybe even the tire. Absolutely not recommended!
    Not talking about the fact that Porsche will very likely void the air suspension warranty for 22'' equipped Cayenne (I bet the dealer who sold you this stuff didn't tell ya... ).

    I'm sure glad you said this first because I have been thinking the same thing when I see forum contributors showing photos of those 22" wheels. I don't want to offend anyone but this really doesn't seem like a good idea to me. Even if you stay on the street 100% of the time.

    You really have to be driving very hard and fast to exceed the capabilities of the standard 18" 255/55. I don't think there is a good performance reason to go beyond this size for the street. And who is there that plans to take the Cayenne to the track? We don't really need more dry pavement performance than this. Asthetics are a different matter. I really like the looks of the 19" wheel and the wider stance that tire gives the car. And I like the 20" sport technos as well. But, 20" really needs to be the practical limit for a street tire and wheel.

    RC is correct, I just had a flat tire on my X5 with the 22" yesterday, another bad luck for me. But its fine for me since I like the look of the car even that the ride is horrible and it gives me alot of headaches with the holes and bumps.
