    I read this too, curious if it'll be an isolated case...

    If I'm not mistaken you can retrofit the Cup's steel discs to the 997.2 GT3, that should solve things...

    Two friends of mine (frequent track visitors) reported the same problem, but only for the rear brakes. Apparently the culprit were the pads (obviously not so well suited for track use) not the discs. After replacing the rear discs and using some more performance oriented pads (Endless) the problem never occured again.

    The backs of the pads in photo 0657 shows the pads reached temperatures the protective coating couldn't tolerate.  The coating began to blister and burn.  Maybe some problem caused the brakes not to release completely.  Perhaps he was going around the track with slightly engaged brakes.  That would burn them up for sure since they never would cool down.  You'd never notice the slight drag either.  Could using a different, though highly regarded, brand of brake fluid cause that sort of thing to happen?

    I was also surprised about the comment reg. the Castrol brake fluid in the comments below. A similiar issue (overheated/prematurely worn out rear brakes on the track) appeared on the 997.1 Turbos as well, if I recall correctly.

    I still question whether the stability system applies the rear brakes in certain conditions of lacking tracktion and therefore might overheat on the track. As Porsche fitted cooling ducts to the rear brakes, they might have had this issue in development phase as well. Does anybody know, whether SC/TC still engages in certain circumstances when switched off?

    This is a theoretical explanation so far, should this be the case though than one has to consider that, on the 997.2 Turbo, the rear brakes are assigned with the PTM function furthermore.

    Yes, the "development phase" was the MKI (without the ducts) Smiley Your observation regarding TC is right, but with the MKI it typically just caused faster wear but not a fast "melting" of the discs. And TC off means "off" also in the MKII.

    No brake pad material optimized for road use can also be the optimum for track use; the two sets of operating conditions and driver expectations (response, feel, anti-fade characteristics, noise) are just too different.
    The problem probably arises first at the rear axle because less cooling air gets to the discs there than to the front ones? Smiley

    Unless this fellow is an elite driver, I really can't see how he burned out his brakes in that manner.  The GT3 is made for this sort of driving.  There has got to be some explanation.  If it isn't due to defective materials or a mechanical failure somewhere in the braking system, I have to conclude he was somehow riding the brakes.  Excessive left foot braking maybe?  Continually applying the brakes while the engine is delivering power would produce this result.

    Well, it's a mechanical problem then.  Maybe the master cylinder or the power brake booster didn't release the brakes completely at some point and the brakes burned.  That's where I'd look next.  Brakes burning in this manner doesn't seem to be a general problem or hundreds of drivers would be complaining about it.

    Yeah i read this earlier today. Interesting point about the brakes being new and hence not 'run in' before going on the track.

    I guess it would be interesting to know what the mileage of the car was before it went on the track. 

    Not sure i would want to put my car on a track until it had a couple of thousand miles on the clock as although the engines don't technically need running in these days all the other mechanical parts probably still do ?

    what is the correct way to 'run in' the brakes on a new car - i was previously told gentle on the brakes for the first 200km?

     

    What is the correct way to run in a new set of pads - i was told to gradually bring them up to a high temperature (i.e. high = several big brakes cutting 100km off speed) and then to let them cool?

     

    Does TC cause any braking? (or is it only SC)

    My colleague just got new brakes on his '05 Boxster.  Before we went to the track I mentioned to him that he should find out how to "bed" his brakes.  He called the service manager of the Porsche dealer who said not to worry.  They would be bedded by the time he completed the 30 mile trip back home.  All the congestion on the freeway would take care of it.

    He had no problems at the track.

    Hi Guys,

    My 997,2 GT3 is currently at the dealer for the exact same brake problem with only 5000kms on it.  I don't track it, but do a lot of hard mountain driving.  I also don't abuse my brakes nor my cars but the squeeking of my brakes and grinding were unbearable.  I sent the car to the dealer and they told me that there was a problem with the pads and that everything will be covered via warranty.  They also said they are ordering a paste to place on the pads to top this from happening again.  If anyone is orederng a new GT3 i would definately go for th ceramics....i wouldn't order these brakes again....
