    There's no doubt that when you increase power and decrease displacement, you increase "stress". Of course, that can be mitigated by design, engineering, materials and precision execution, all that cost extra money for the completed and amortized assembly. And somewhere in that murky mess of nerdy-engineer variables, you have durability and longevity...

    It's hard to say what "balance" of performance vs. sturdiness vs. cost any manufacturer settles on for a car, until you drive it until it breaks.

    Z3s were (and Z4s are) all built in the States, even the ///M cars. But the S54 engines themselves are all built in Germany so for the M Roadsters they ship the engine to the States to be bolted into the chassis. It's unlikely that was a factor in the failure, though, since hundereds of M3 cars have experienced the exact same failure I had.

    My local dealer billed about $15k to BMWNA for the engine replacement, although that was back in 2002. I don't know if the crate motor price is lower now that there are a lot more S54 mill cars on the road. I'm sure it's not cheap, even if it is cheaper now.

    Yeah I realize there was a rash of engine failures which cast a pall over things. They did straighten things out I guess. I'm just trying to figure out what to do with my aging M3, the warrenty runs out next year. would have been EASY to just buy the new M3 but Nooooooooooooooo..., they had to f it up lookswise way beyond my tolerance level.

    Anyway thanks for the us$15K (and maybe less) estimate; seems about right. That's BMW for you... . It's hard to justify owning a PITA car without a warrenty. Makes me f'ing scream that buying a new one is completely depressing because of their looks.

    I'm just trying to figure out what to do with my aging M3, the warrenty runs out next year.

    Keep it and mod it! Dinan can turn it into a real screamer. Because of the early engine problems (caused by faulty oil pumps) my warranty was extended to 6 years/100,000 miles. My engine has been pumping out 462 HP and 328 ft/lbs for about 12,000 miles now with no signs of failure. Does not burn oil, just lots of fuel.

    The car is somewhat "raw" in nature, so I'm hoping the 997 Turbo will be a little more civilized.
