    Here's a question for the 997 vs 996 experts...

Has anyone else noticed the the 997 has fewer slots in the auto-raising rear spoiler? Its been mentioned many times, and I think it looks smoother on the 997 than the 996 by far.

However, I was washing my car the other day, and I noticed that, on the 996, the slots point down, towards the engine. So, when the spoiler is raised, it seems like some air would also get directed down into the engine bay, rather than just out.

On the 997, the slots are flat, and point out of the engine, so it would seem that when the spoiler is raised, very little or no air would get directed down into the engine.

My question is: is there any cooling purpose to these slots, or are they merely there to control air-flow out of the engine?

To see what I'm talking about, look at the photo comparing the rear spoilers of the 996 and 997.

I think they are for VENTING only - I wouldn't worry about cooling while the spoiler is up - that has GOT to be more airflow over the engine.... no matter how the slats point....

Re: Scree - stop looking at the 997 and fix my XBOX

Agreed....venting and most likely, downforce at speed. The intake issue is not related to that spoiler anymore.

Re: Scree - stop looking at the 997 and fix my XBOX

On the 996 Turbo, those slats have always opened to the rear, like on the 997.

Re: Scree - stop looking at the 997 and fix my XBOX

Both ways are providing a good cooling inhaust.

Example - take a convertible and take a nice long hair girl on the copilot seat. Drive 100 km/h and watch her hairs... they are blowing to the front and not to the back! So - its the same what happens to the spoiler - both ways will get enough air to cool down the engine.

    cheers, L@rs

Re: Scree - stop looking at the 997 and fix my XBOX

Lars is absolutely right, hence the presence of the windshot on the conv. Air is a fluid and when a solid enters a fluid medium you have behind it the turbulence aera, where the fluid actually "comes back" against the flow.
Grab a fuild dynamics or a earodynamic physics book, it is very intersting stuff.
Acutally for your general knowledge, the perfectly aerodynamic shape that doens't create turbulence behind it isthe water drop shape. (Cf: ever looked at the shape of an airplane wing, thick at the front, thinning towards the back)
Now you understand why the 911 is a great aerodynamic shape, thanks to the swooping back. For a sport car it has one of the best Cx.

Re: Scree - stop looking at the 997 and fix my XBOX

Fanch, how does turbulance affect the aerodynamics of a forward-moving vehicle? Because it seems to be that virtually no very high-end sports cars have a rear end that minimizes turbulance.

Many of them are converting this turbulence into downforce, for better stability

    There you go.
