    Early oil change?

This has been debated before but I did a search for the past 12 weeks and didn't find anything specific to my question. P-car has 960 miles and goes in this week to replace a faulty sensor (headlights are mis-aligned). I know that, years ago, it was a good idea to change the oil and filter around 500 miles to rid the oil of any metal shavings/filings inherent in the engine production process.
I drive my car short distances but always long enough (and then some) for the oil to get to maximum temperature. I'll be changing the oil & filter once a year (that would be next Nov.) since it will take me a long time to get to 20,000 miles and the dealer suggested those parameters (20,000 miles OR once a year). I plan to keep this car for some time.
So, should I get an oil & filter change this coming week or just wait until Nov. 2006?
    Thanks,
    Don

    Re: Early oil change?

I'm sure it can't hurt to change your oil early. Like you I plan on changing my oil once a year. I say go for it.

    Re: Early oil change?

I've been meaning to ask if anybody knows if the oil in our engines is specially concocted for the breakin of a new engine. If this were so it would be bad to change it too soon for "normal" oil.

If it's the same oil? If I were you, already taking car in for service, just have them do an oil change and forget about it.

    Re: Early oil change?

Trust PAG on this ----- I am normally quick to change, but whether they say so or not, the oil is probably 'special'.

I changed the oil in my Acura TL a little early (although I had run it in very carefully ---- see the thread above on running in----- and then found out, that although the Acura National Service Advisory Group did not mention it, there WAS special oil in the engine.

You will also have added a few litres to the Carrera by the time the year is up ---- and there is lots of oil in this engine, so WAIT!

    Re: Early oil change?

Thanks to all. I know my 05 Honda DID COME WITH break-in oil (like the old days) so it makes sense your Acura did too. If the 911 does also, Porsche sure doesn't tell you.
I had to call Service today to reschedule my bad sensor replacement so I asked the Service Manager what he would do re: the oil & filter change. "If it were MY car, I'd wait and change it in something like 3,000 miles or when the first year is up next November", he said.
He also said the oil & filter change will run between $100 and $120, not bad considering the $200 plus I've been hearing on this forum.

    Re: Early oil change?

I had dealer do an oil change at 1,000 miles, for $130 at least it gave me peace of mind as much as anything else.

I asked the service tech with 18 yrs. experience what he would do if it were his car, he said not a big deal either way but he would do it. Good salesmanship maybe. I've never heard any mention of the possibility of Porsche using special break-in oil until this thread.

Two BMW E46 M3's I've owned always required 1200 mile service (fluid dumps of engine oil, differential, can't remember maybe gearbox oil also).

    Re: Early oil change?

$130 is a good deal, I pay $240 in South CA. I am planning on Changing every 9 months.

    Re: Early oil change?

I just paid $225 at the dealer. 6,300 miles/11 months old.

    Re: Early oil change?

Changed my own at 10K. Gives me piece of mind. Very easy to perform and inexpensive compared to dealership. Porsche will perform 20K intervals.

    Re: Early oil change?

I asked my service advisor and he said on a 997 to wait till 20k. On earlier 911s, it was a different story.

    Re: Early oil change?

20,000 or 2 years makes me think more about resale value than will I have a problem. Had my 997s 1 year now and have done 6,300 miles. I think about resales as being being 60% the reason to have the oil changed versus 40% of there being an issue.

    Re: Early oil change?

I spoke to the technician at my dealership when I was having my rattly handbrake replaced whether it was worth changing engine oil early or not. He said not a big issue if you don't, obviously better if you do.

I supplied my own oil as a local store (Halfords) were doing a special on Mobil 1 at the time. My Porsche centre charged about Pounds7 for a new filter and about Pounds50 for labour. Best bit for me was getting to have a good look underneath the car and at the engine itself. The oil after 4014 miles was not as black and dirty as I was expecting.

    Re: Early oil change?

How did you go about changing oil on 997?
Some detailed 'how to' would be appreciated.
    Thanks

    Re: Early oil change?

RennTech.org has a detailed oil change procedure in the DIY 996 section. The procedure is the same for the 997 but the oil refill might be different. Use the oil refill capacity in the 997 manual.

You should use the correct oil wrench to remove th filter housing to avoid cracking it.

I plan on changing my own oil yearly. If you DIY it's only $75 for the filter, seal and oil.
