    986 to 987

    How many of you upgraded from a 986 to an 987?
    If you did, from which model to which one?
    And how would you compare the 2 cars? Was it worth the upgrade?
    Still wondering...I test drove the 987s, and yes, it is an improvement over my 986s, but I can't put a $ value on that

    I had a 986 back in 2001 and I picked up a 987S last August. I wouldn't even think twice about picking up the 987. The interior alone is a reason to change from one to another. There are a bunch of other things you could look including a more powerful engine, the new technology options (Sports Chrono, PASM, etc.) - the safety (thorax and head airbags, the first in a roadster)...

    The 986 is a great car, but the 987 is superior.

    I have extensively driven a 2000 standard 986 and while I know it wasn't an S, there is no comparison to my new 987S. Feels much more refined. Not to mention the huge power junp. If you can comfortably afford a 987S I would upgrade in a heart beat. Also, I have seen a couple dealers in So Cal that still have some 05 987S's in stock that are very heavily discounted. To the tune of 12K off MSRP. Selection is not that great, but you can find a great deal on a new car.

    The 987's front end feels much stiffer, better interior, not as raw but I still prefer 986's steering response. Also you can still activate the top in motion is cool. PASM is great,too.

    I traded my 2001 986S in on a 987S last Noveember. My 987S is a vast improvement over the 986S - interior, available options, horsepower, handling. My recomendation is go for a 987.

    drove a 00' 2.7L and now I have a 05' 2.7L

    better gear change, less body flex, stonger engine, heaps better interior.

    tho I was suprised there's only a little jump in engine power from 987 to 987S.

    go figure

    looks like no big differences, but a bit better everywhere...you have the same dilemna than me.
    a 3.4L boxster S would help me make the step :-)

    According to Porsche-Jeck's translation of the Sport Auto supertest article:

    Compared to the original Boxster the 987 S feels almost like a completely different car

    I would say that's quite a statement...

    well, I think it depends whether you count the original 2.5/204hp version or the latest S....in the latter, it is not completely different...The 987 is at a minimum of where it should be compared to the previous model. Evolution but not revolution...

    Went from a 99 986 to an 03 986-WOW! I thought it wouldn't get any better than that...until getting my 06 987S. It's over, it's all over! This car rocks! I sell Mercedes-Benz, and the only model that comes close to the 987S value is the AMG cars (CLK, SLK), which are $20-$30K more money. When you see an AMG, you say..."nice car." When you see a 987S especially in SY, you say, "Wow, look at that!" ;-)

    I actually said the same thing to myself when I test drove the SLK55 ... it doesn't stir the soul like a Porsche can.

    Compared to the my 2001 Boxster my 987 S is a complete different car. I like EVERYTHING better -- exept for the key. Is bulky and odd to use. Still regrets on no iPod integration.
