    The "comparison" Taycan 4s vs Tesla Model 3P on Nordschleife was by some Youtuber named "Sebastian Vittel". By no means a valid comparison as there were two different drivers for both cars (by the looks of it the driver of the Taycan didn't drive the best of lines) and the Taycan on 19" Hankook tires which are optimized for low rolling resistance and long life vs 20" Michelin PS4 on the Tesla. And after two laps of spirited driving (not really a race) they end up roughly the same. 

    So if the Tesla with better tires, a better driver and a better power to weight ratio doesn't clearly win, I surely didn't out-handle the Taycan.

    No offense, I also have a Tesla M3P (mostly driven by my wife) and it's a nice car - even a good performer for the money - but not really the holy grail of everything :)

     Thought it was a lap at Hockenheim as I recall but I have not been able to find it. Does not really matter.

    I am just very favorably impressed that the Taycan and other BEVs can put in a competitive lap time!

    I don't really care how many laps they can complete. I am never going to buy one for a track day car. I also do not forsee using one for any lengthy highway trips. Normal street and highway driving within the greater metro area with less than 200 miles covered in a day seems like they are great for that purpose. I got a somewhat depressing e-mail from Google summarizing my travels for the last year, and yes surely part of it is the year of Covid, but I never left the greater metro area. Planning a 2-1/2 hour drive to Leawood's Lakehouse today. Starting 2021 off better!

    Last year in the Covid world, I never traveled more than 35 miles away from home.  There was absolutely no point as the surrounding states have implemented very stringent restrictions on dining and other forms of entertainment.  It is doubtful any of the cars in the stable did more than 2,500 miles last year.

    I agree with the above two posts. The pandemic has had a chilling effect on longer auto travel. But I will also say that my wife and I greatly enjoyed our 1500 mile round-trip from the Washington DC area to Vermont. Our 992C4S was the perfect car for two people on a personal adventure together. Comfortable, powerful, precise and always exciting. We did have to make a few detail plans – quarantine, lodging precautions, etc. – but all easily accomplished and worth the time compared to the wonderful overall experience.

    WOW. Having to go through all those calculations (+stress) isn’t worthy of any car. Smiley

     

    That's fact of life for EVs. Not even Tesla with their supercharger network is immune. 

    In a normal car, people just get in and go, gas stations are beyond numerous so there will always be one somewhere. Not so with EV chargers. 

    I have been saying this from the beginning, infrastructure is always the key to adoption, when chargers can be remotely close to the density of gas station, EV will win the war.

    And herein lies the achilles heal of my Taycan Turbo S. It is surprisingly good to drive (in Sport or Sport Plus, very "floaty" in Normal) but never again will I use it for along journey. The charging infrastructure in the UK is currently woefully inadequate unless one has a Tesla.

     

    And that's the reason I kept my Panamera turbo S instead of replacing it with the Taycan. Can't beat doing 800+km a tank on hybrid mode in a 680hp car on the highway.

    Once I get to the destinations I can take advantage of local charging and drive around as a electric car every day. Best of both world.

    Heck even in my 918 in hybrid mode I did just about 650km a tank on the highway.

    I hope not.

    I walk to work Monday to Saturday.

    In a typical week, I drive less than 40 miles per week.  Smiley

    I managed almost 16k miles in the Tesla. About double what I did last year. Lots of trips to the lake and several long road trips to the mountains to the west. In the evenings I would frequently just jump into the car and drive around for a few hours to get out. During the long trips the superchargers keep you totally isolated from other people. No busy fuel or truck stop required.

    This year I've put 25,000Km on the GTS in daily driving, life is too short to waste that time in a people mover imo if you enjoy driving a sportscar even in daily driving. That said, I understand everyone has different circumstances and preferences.

    You'd be surprised.

    I was to Italy in June and to Dubai end of August.

    Italy was after I knew that we all (exception my son) had antibodies. We got tested quite often (incl. PCR). We weren't afraid of infecting someone (anymore) and our risk was minimal as well.

    Dubai was a different story: PCR testing before the flight, PCR testing before the departure flight as well. In Dubai, many people were wearing their mask under the nose and there was no real social distancing in supermarkets, so I realized fast that the reported infection numbers couldn't be right. Smiley

    In both vacations, we kept social distancing, if not possible, we left. We always wore FFP2/N95 masks, including the plane. In the plane, some people were not respecting the rules and the flight attendants talked to them over and over again but it was like a cat and mouse game. Interesting how ignorant some people are (mostly young people but also an older guy from Germany and a middle aged guy from Pakistan whose behaviour caused quite a turmoil...long story).

    Mountains? Lakes? Yes, we spend the weekends sometimes outside of our home but we avoid people. We reduced social contacts to a bare minimum, out of respect of others who may get very sick. Me and my wife do not fear the virus anymore, even if neither of us wants to get it (we very likely had it anyway, judging by our antibody counts) but our jobs require a certain role model function.

    Many people we know meet with friends all the time and even if some(!) of them respect the rules with how many households can meet, they basically meet dozens of different people per week, making this whole social distancing a joke. Even worse: People do not understand that even if they can meet with a person from another household, they need to keep social distance and wear a mask. Nobody does that. Smiley 

    Hence...the consequence...the numbers we see. Smiley

    Got my first Moderna dose a week ago, with the second one scheduled for February 9.  I will be extra cautious before the second dose and continue to be cautious and wear a mask and social distance even afterwards.👍

    Smiley Me and my wife are already vaccinated (Biontech/Pfizer), second dose is due this week.

    I am still careful, so is my wife and even after the second dose, we will be careful, keep social distancing and wear a mask (FFP2/N95 masks are now mandatory in Bavaria anyway, so...).

    There is no experience with the vaccine, we do not know much about real life immunity period, how good the immunity will be, if we are still able to infect others if we catch COVID-19 (still possible, even with the vaccine), how good it works in certain age groups, how well it works with the mutations and so on. Everything we know so far is based on manufacturer trial data.

    My truck dinosaur in 3.4 (with launch control), 3.7 seconds without launch control. 0-100 kph, not 0-60 mph.

    I posted the videos for proof, incl. two Tesla (X and Y) in comparison. Just pay attention who is in the lead just right after the start. No Tesla. Smiley

    You need to understand that there is always a reason why I choose a car and I don't do it for prestige/image or anything else, I do it because they are fun to drive and listen to.

    When the Trackhawk hits higher rev figures, hell brakes loose in the sound department. More fun than any EV on this planet. Smiley

    There is no way your truck has similar throttle and torque response to an EV.  It is a physical impossibility based on numerous factors including how an electric motor versus an ICE develops torque as well as the responsiveness of the throttle and traction control.  

    Electric motors generate maximum torque at 0 RPMs, however, for drivability, the VFD alter the torque curve to reduce jerk, also known as step off.  An ICE, even one with a supercharger, must generate significant rpms before measurable torque is generated.  Compounding this is the stall RPM of the torque converter in the automatic transmission; therefore,   an ICE needs at least 1,500 RPMs before the vehicle even moves.  Launch Control is an attempt to address that torque lag but it isn't always possible to engage it many real world driving situations.  

    Throttle response in an ICE is further hampered by the inertia of the air column entering the engine, passing the throttle plate and the intake valves.  This is why traction control on an EV is more immediate in response than in an ICE.  

    Whilst, under controlled conditions, an ICE can exceed the accelerative force of an EV, in the real world with similar power to weight ratios, the balance tips to the EV every time.

    Autocar and Porsche break 13 EV world records

    "

    When Autocar's Colin Goodwin suggested to Porsche that it would be cool to set some electric vehicle speed and distance records, Porsche took it *very* seriously.

    And so a few weeks ago we lined up at Brands Hatch with a Porsche Taycan Turbo S and a Porsche Taycan 4S in historic racing colours, aiming to set a dozen distance and speed records. 

    To help, Porsche brought a bevy of racing drivers including current Porsche Carrera Cup and Sprint champions, former F1 and sports car ace Jonathan Palmer, and Porsche living legend Richard Attwood. Then there was Autocar's Goodwin.

    Starting and finishing in darkness, over 13 hours the team of six drivers and two cars set records for 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000 kilometres, as well as for 50, 100, 200 and 500 miles. They also turned in one-hour, three-hour, six-hour and 12-hour records. 

    The crowning achievement of the bid, full details of which are laid out over 10 pages in Autocar magazine's 27 January 2021 issue, was the 1000km record, achieved in almost exactly 13 hours, the record run beginning in darkness at 7am and finishing a few seconds after 8pm that night.
