    991 sharper than 997

Thought I share the experience from today - I had a 991 S PDK for a testdrive today. Not because I'm in the market for a Carrera (new car will be a 981S Smiley) - I just wanted to test the new PDK.

After reading so many critical comments on how "GT-ish" the car has become compared to the 997 I can only laugh Smiley

Suspension/ grip is out of this world - close to 997 GT3 Smiley Even my wife who was bored to death by a. 997.2 S Cab loaner (why should we ever swap the Boxster S for such a boring car ? ) Smiley loved the car......which means she will even more love the 981 Smiley........final comment from my wife Smiley: 997 Carrera feels like a boring taxi compared to the 991  Carrera Smiley

Congrats to everyone who gets the 991 - fantastic car Smiley

x2 Smiley  Thats quite an endorsement coming from you Smiley 21 IMO the car has two personalities unlike the 997, a calm and relaxed manner on regular driving, but when you hit a couple of buttons and push the pace then its Mr. Hide, with a handling and grip that makes the 997 look 2 generations old Smiley

Thanks for sharing your impressions PJ !

It would be great to read your opinion of it on some laps of the Nordschleife from a Ring regular like you ... :)

How did you find the electric steering? What was the feedback like? How precise was it?

PJ : would love to hear yr comparison 991 vs GT3 - I still haven't driven the 991 but considering that the RS has already a wider front track and tires I am curious for this comparison

    Re: 991 sharper than 997

    @P-J

For the expert 911 driver and NBR regular you are, your impressions above are ungenerous smiley We want more!

I hope they are just a teaser for an elaborate analysis of the intricacies of the latest car, in the near future. I too would appreciate your own views on the controversial steering system.

I tried the 991s and very much agree with you. It gives you the GT feeling in city calm driving, the moment you push the car, it is even there before you are ready for it. Lots of improvement over 997s. The only disappointing thing to me was the steering. It may be because the car I drove has the "power steering plus" option. If I would spec a car, I will drop this option and get the (PDCC)  sports chassis (20 mm lower). I think that would much improve the steering feedback.

    Cant wait to see/drive the 991 GT3.

Can't compare. They are different schools. 991s is an outstanding daily driver. The GT3/RS is a fun ride with racing feel driving experience that is incomparable.

You have to drive both to know it.

    Re: 991 sharper than 997

I assume what BjoernB meant was that the 991 apparently achieves the same lap time on the Ring than the 997.2 GT3...

    Not really  SmileySmiley

What I mean that it feels more GT if you drive it in a more city like driving, but once you start driving aggressively it stretches its muscles Smiley

I got your point rfakhri. I was actually responding to P-J Smiley He did not seem to have experienced what most of us did , that is a much more ' refined = GT feeling '' when driven normally . The center console just adding a bit on that also.

    Re: 991 sharper than 997

well, I will testdrive the 991 the next month - w'll see.

d997h : I haven't heard that the 991 does a 7:33...indecision  however, it's not about laptimes in my book it's about a overall feeling driving a 911 - n that has to be a total different experience to yr daily driver or so-called "Sportscars"

with GT I ment the GT3 or GT3RS - not GrandTourismo cars of course kiss

    HI Porsche Jeck,

Thanks...interesting note. Yes, with the 981 you make a better deal than with trading a GT3 for a 991.

Just one question: you say 991 suspension is out of this world..but than you say its close to GT3...so is the GT3 also out if this world? must be - or? which is better?

I wouldnt agree that a 997.2 would be a boring car..only the 997.2 PDK is "boring"..

LoL Smiley Sorry for not replying earlier to your questions, but I am working like a madman - some reality distortion now and then helps to cope with the workload Smiley

@ Easy: the steering is actually better than I thought - but then my expactions were very low.... unless you cruise in taxi mode in the city it feels rather meaty (definitely not as the AUDI like light artificial feeling) and it's very precise when attacking a corner. However there is no doubt that I very much prefer the steering of both 997.1 GT3 and 987.1 BoxsterS. The steering simply "talks" less with the driver. It doesn't spoil the experience unless you need every little bit of extra information from the steering - in the wet or on the track. But that's just an assumption as I drove the car in the dry....on public roads indecision

@ Gnil: you know me too well smiley Yes, I drove it as I had stolen it.  And here's the problem: if you want to tickle Mr. Hide rather than being bored by Mr. Jekyll you are way beyond what traffic law suggests....Sometimes I was really shocked when looking at the speedo angry

@ BjoernB: hard to compare a 997.1 GT3 (the 911 I know other) with the 991 S. Completely different packages. My comparison mainly referred to the suspension/grip - IMHO this is the department where the 991 comes closest to a 997 GT3. Not only that the grip level is fantastic it also feels just right when pushing the car (again: driving license at risk on public roads...). If you really want to feel that the 991 is still a rear-engined car you have to do crazy things.....as I did in a roundabout near the Porsche Zentrum. The other drivers approaching the roundabout simply stopped and smiled while I was doing 20 "laps" or so...smiley

I have not the slightest doubt that the reported NoS laptimes for the 991S are real: suspension, wider track, longer wheelbase allows for crazy speeds in the fast corners. I am very much looking forward to the first "battle" against one of these toys with my old school GT3 broken heart

@ GTLover: the swap of my GT3 to a 991 Carrera was never an option for me as the GT3 is a tracktoy only and as such it provides more driving fun (laptimes put aside).  We will swap our 987.1 BoxsterS to a 981 S and the GT3 will stay and probably will be replaced by a 997 3.8 RS or a 991 GT3.

Maybe one final remark regarding the PDK: wifey loved it (that was the real purpose of the testdrive as she wants the PDK in the new BoxsterS but had no experiences with PDK cars so far) and I liked it at least better than expected...

Though I have to say I never changed gears so often "manually" with an automized gear box asin the 991 - ideal setting for me: Sport (Sport+ is useless in public road driving IMHO) and "manual" gear shifts. Not as involving like an old school manual, but also not a playstation feeling. Of course it's a bit ridiculous if you approach a red light and the pedestrians think you are perfect with heel-toe when shifting down from 2nd gear to 1st gear indecision

As for the sound: the car was not equipped with the PSE but in Sport or Sport + with the "sound generator" in the rear cabin activated the sound was really nice - maybe even better than a 997.2 with PSE. Now I can ownly  dream of the sound in the new Boxster S with PSE.....top down,  engine and air intakes right near the driver...blush

    Re: 991 sharper than 997

    Hi Porsche Jeck,

OK - thanks for your info. Keep the GT3 or get the 997 GT3RS...I wouldnt get the new GT3 until it has proven its reliabilty on the track and it wont be available before June/July 2013 anyway..

Iin the mean time I would get the RS..besides the 991 GT3 wil have around 450HP too..how much it will be quicker than a 997.2 GT3RS remains to be seen..and on this level it would also largely depend on the driver..

    take care,
