    Re: 24h race Nürburgring

    Right!

I saw the race from first lap too,and when Manthey Porsche was behind the GT40 was incredible how fast they go,and how fast they pass slower cars..incredible race, specially if you know the Ring and you make also one lap thereSmileySmiley

    Re: 24h race Nürburgring

Agree, the first stints were simply stunning and DSF (German TV station) delivered a pretty good coverage and exciting pictures.

Having just done the Scuderia Hanseat course two weeks ago, one does even more admire what these guys delivered. F1 Monte Carlo was lame and dull in comparison.

Also - all the RSR's were 2008 models.

why not 2009 model for Manthey?

I don't really know, but I think it may have something to do with the engine size. The 2009 RSR have 4.0L engines.

Also  - the 2009 car has AC (as per ACO regulations) and this is not required by the rules for the 24H. Nurburgring.

maybe Manthey opted for 2008 reliability

maybe...but the 2009 car has proved not only to be substantially quicker (better handling), but also quite reliable.

Reminds me of an old Porsche poster giving top ten finishers of a race, may even have been the 24h at Nürburgring. The 7th finisher was a BMW. All the others were Porsches.

The caption read: "Nobody's perfect".  Smiley

     It was Le Mans 1983.

    Reginos, thanks for that! Smiley

I had tried to find that poster in the internet a while ago and failed.

So the Sauber/BMW was in 9th place, not 7th as I said. Smiley My memory failed me on that detail after 26 years. Smiley

Oh well, as the poster says: Nobody's perfect. Smiley

    Re: 24h race Nürburgring

How can a company that acomplished such feats have someone that does not like motorsport at the helm?

The current situation is a bit like having a vegeterian run a butchery.

Putting some factory drivers in customer cars does not signify taking a motorsport seriously. That is not to say that they didn't take this particualr race seriously. The point is that Porsche's motorsport effort lately does not even begin to compare with that of Audi.

Sorry, didn´t get my points across properly, must´ve been due to Monday morning... Smiley

The Nürburgring 24h race has always been dominated (in terms of numbers) by professional and amateur teams without factory backup. Manufacturers have come and gone, BMW with the 320d and M3 GTR or Audi and Opel with their DTM racers. All of them backed out after they´d won and therefore met their plans.

Manthey has been the particular Porsche team with significant factory support and considering the business connections it doesn´t come as a surprise. I do believe that this is the biggest effort Porsche will put into this racing series, furthermore the RSRs at Le Mans are raced by indepedent teams as well, aren´t they?

If the CEO or head of motorsports races their own cars seems irrelevant to me, it certainly is a nice but indecisive feature to me. Stryzek (of Opel) has been racing at the VLN and 24h for quite some time but this doesn´t make them produce any better racecars...

Manthey certainly had balls to push their leading car (with the Cup S being close runner-up) that hard. Audi, on the opposite, had four R8s on hand.

    I got your point.

There is no "official" Porsche racing entry anywhere anymore.

Even the RS Spyder program was "farmed out" to Penske.

My point about the CEO 's is not that they were necessarily driving, but that it is important to at least like the sport which provides the very heritage of the company that you are running.

    Re: 24h race Nürburgring

WW is definitely not a "car guy". That might be OK if he ran Kia or even Toyota. But for Porsche (like Ferrari, Aston, Lotus etc) you need someone with all the CEO skills plus passion. I don't know but someone like this must exist in Germany now.

Moreover, IMO WW was the right man for the time he was recruited. He saved Porsche financially then, multiplied sales, introduced new models and componemt sharing, "just in time " methods etc etc. However, his usefulness has expired. Even without the recent insolvency fiasco his time has been up 3-4 years ago. If you take into account the on-going VW debacle he should have been summarily sacked; how can he still get away with this "crime"?

    Re: 24h race Nürburgring

    I'm in complete agreement reginos,

There was a time and place for WW and the type of skills that he posses. That time is now over (and has been for some time now).

Having said that, I don't want in anyway, to detract from his sucesses. He accomplished much and was handsomely rewarded for that. That is where the "strory" should have ended. It did'nt. He was kept on and in my opinion, he was not the right man to lead the company during those times.

Anyhow, my opinion does'nt count. I'm only sorry that others at Porsche did not see it my way.
