Since I put winter tires on the GT4 the car is far from a garage queen. Drove in to work this morning at 4:15am. Not a car on the road. Slamming in the gears and letting that flat 6 howl like a wolf at dawn smiley

    Re: Cayman GT4 & 718 Spyder -- Pistonheads review

    GT4 PDK

    Re: Cayman GT4 & 718 Spyder -- Pistonheads review

    Topspeed:

    GT4 PDK

Be aware that with the PDK version the 718 GT4/Spyder/GTS 4.0 that it adds 68 pounds (31 kg) of weight behind the rear axle (for those mid-engine people who want the mass inside the wheelbase)...

This is a much bigger weight penalty than in the GT3 (35 pounds or 16 kg) in front of the rear axle, since the Manual in the 718 is lighter than the one in the GT3 that shares its outer case with the PDK.

This is why after launch (PDK is better at launching) the Manual is slightly faster than PDK in a straight line (and track times should not favor the PDK much if at all on many tracks).  I've seen a couple lap time comparisons and it's very close with the Manual actually being slightly faster at Hockenheim.

Porsche was worried about this result, so they gave the PDK version a little more torque than the Manual.  But, I think they were a little too stingy - more power was needed to really even the field (but they wanted to make a bigger hp gap to the GT4 RS that is coming).

    Re: Cayman GT4 & 718 Spyder -- Pistonheads review

Update - I was informed that the PDK and Manual laps were not made on same day or time of year, so comparison may not be totally reliable.  Will update numbers if I find more reliable ones...

So in short, PDK does not fix the gearing cheeky

It is improved in terms of shortening it a bit, but the real benefit of a 7-speed is to make the gears closer together which the PDK does not do much in this case (7th gear is not useful for performance in this case).  If they packed 7 gears into the range of the Manual 6spd it could have been a big improvement with respect to gearing (they saved money by just using the regular PDK from the 718 and shortening 7th gear a bit, but top speed is still in 6th).

I really hope they address this properly with the GT4 RS (but I'm worried they'll keep using the same 7 gears with a lower Final Drive, assuming the redline is higher).

Absolutely classic. Porsche just can’t help themselves when it comes to their mid-engine products... Tweak this, adjust that, but whatever they do, they won’t build the best car they can. When it comes to mid-engine, Porsche is a cynical marketing firm, not a sports car manufacturer. I’m saying it here - not another dollar from me, ever.

    Re: Cayman GT4 & 718 Spyder -- Pistonheads review

Also seems to me that it’s just the standard PDK from the normal range, not a PDK-S as they fit to GT3/RS?

As I understand all Boxsters and Caymans share the same Audi based 6-speed Getrag gearbox all the way back from the 987. There were some minor changes done by Getrag over the years, but mechanically I read somewhere that they are all the same.

It's regular PDK with 7th gear made a little shorter (but top speed still in 6th).

The gearbox is identical, but I think the shifter on the GT4/Spyder has a shorter throw (due to different geometry in the external mechanism).
