    Paris Dakar 2009

Where do you follow the race? The official site seems to be a good starting point, but I'ld like to have another point of view.

This is stage 6 summary video:

    Re: Paris Dakar 2009

For us Swiss on eurosport at 23h00.

Luc alphan on Mitsubishi had to quit. Otherwise the Wolswagen are doing great

    and BMW, no?

    Re: Paris Dakar 2009

Yes BMW too, but the leader just had an engine problem yesterday.

From what i understood he missed a control point cause he didn't wanted to take the dunes due to his engine.

    Re: Paris Dakar 2009

Al-Attiyah has been disqualified, due to engine overheating he drove around some dunes and missed some control points (that were hidden by the organizer to ensure the participants take the proper route). Volkswagen is doing well so far but the rallye seems to be very demanding. None of the teams has an advantage in terms of experiences which shows off now. Very interesting race this year, I am amazed about the South Americans´ interest in motorsport!

    Re: Paris Dakar 2009

Yes, the dunes look stunning and really challenging.

Just imagine driving the dunes under these conditions for hours, with every dune being different and the risk of getting stuck if you are not concentrated for a fraction of a second.

One of the drivers said that there were people along the whole track (350km in the middle of the desert).

    Re: Paris Dakar 2009

Yesterday´s coverage from Eurosport, take a look at the manouvre starting at 07:50 min. Stunning!

Al-Attiyah is definately out of the race, according to AMS every car missing out on more than four control points will be disqualified. Still an impressive achievement by Sven Quandt´s team and, albeit not an official manufacturer´s team, still great PR for BMW.

Peterhansel (Mitsubishi) is out of the race as well, so currently three Volkswagen and Roma´s Mitsubishi left on the top four positions.

    Re: Paris Dakar 2009

    not paris dakar.

    now its lisbon dakarSmiley

    but in south america lol

    Re: Paris Dakar 2009

i watch a hour long summery each day of that days stage on OLN (outdoor life network) It might be online available on channelsurfing.net

It's surely is really fun to watch this hard race. Stupid muslims for now the rallye will be in untouched south america. I was mad when i heard this news at first because of the historic tradition and all but now i laugh at it because they (the terrorist thread) shot themselves in the foot because as far as i recall the rallye has always helped locals in providing food and clean drinking water and such... From now on hope it won't return back to the Sahara..

    Re: Paris Dakar 2009

The rally is really fun to watch, today seems to become really interesting, although they canceled a dune section.

It's nice to see how the Dakar supports the locals, especially because it's somewhere in the middle of nowhere :)

    Re: Paris Dakar 2009

I always liked watching this race. The scenery is so exotic and the cars/trucks interesting. Thanks for posting.

    The vehicles are like an old speed racer cartoon. It reminded me of a new proposed US army vehicle built by oshkosh;

    Re: Paris Dakar 2009

The Dakar is over, with the De Villiers winning in a VW Diesel.

    Re: Paris Dakar 2009

This was the most intense Dakar that I can remember, even as a spectator. Sad incident for Sainz, that accident wasn´t Perin´s or his own fault.

Impressive to see that Gordon finished 3rd in the Hummer, based on components for the Baja rallye. Still he lost almost two hours on the leading VWs.

The enthusiasm of spectators, choice and challenge of the selected route and the coverage were great. I´d be looking forward if the rallye will take place in South America once more next year...

    Re: Paris Dakar 2009

    Ferdie, 100% ack.

Gordon was nice, but he had some advantages with being able to control the pressure of his tires from inside the car.

But OTOH, I understand the Hummer wasn't even 4WD.

This is onboard footage of Gordon:

Robby Gordons youtube channel is also nice: http://www.youtube.com/rgm7

    Re: Paris Dakar 2009

By the way, Mitsubishi finally decided to drop endurance racing after participating at the Dakar rallye for 26 years.

As Honda in F1 and Subaru and Suzuki in WRC, this is the fourth Japanese manufacturer that drops out of factory-driven racing... Smiley

    Re: Paris Dakar 2009

OMG, I didn't even know it was back on!! I missed it!

I know they cancelled it last year due to war/terrorist concerns in some regions.
