Car manufacturers must privately laugh their asses off reading and listening to customers talk about performance. They know we will never use the performance parameters they build into the car but nevertheless we pay through the nose for them.

What a racket! Cater to our manliness/vanity to pick our wallets. Smiley

So right Nick...  Ive put 15k on the 991 s cab [i havent driven any of my last 15-20 cars that far which shows how much i like it], and see no need to get  turbo S which i would normally do in the past.  Car is plenty fast, good looking and top up and down as needed.

As fun as that turbo S mouth dropping acceleration is... The ROI on it is very low Smiley

The manual makes me part of the car.  A direct link to the power going to the wheels.  Without it I have to depend on electronic switches disconnecting and reconnecting the power!  I want to be a part of the car - connected.  Without me it should not be able to move.  I don't care which is faster (a sequencial manual is the best IMHO at going fast and it also uses a clutch for stopping and downshifting - the cup cars use it, endo of story).

In daily traffic my new (old) Turbo is always in the right great - the one I put it into.  In the real world that is fast enough.  It is not a dragster - and if I want to drag race I want to shift and be the quickest manual.

It is actually interesting that BMW M GmbH offers a manual version of the new M5 in the USA only.  Even if this car looses a second performance from 0-200 kph (125 mph).

I really think that manual is overrated, especially since we have very good sequential/direct shifting systems available now but to each his own I guess.

Today I was speaking with some friends, a bit younger then me, in their 30's , very interested in cars but they can only afford some ' older manual sports car ' .

When I mentioned that I miss manual in my car quite often ...they looked at me like I was from another planet and one said :  manual is so 'has been '  !

This reflects what goes on in the younger generations and how they view manual/dual clutch . Manual is seen as something their parents drove . What they want now are ' paddles' .

There are exceptions, of course . And their is a different relationship to manual in the US vs Europe.

In the US , 98 % of people drive automatic and have never driven manual, don't even know how to .

In europe it is the opposite. 90% of the cars are (were) manual . Every body is driving them, ( from 18 years old to grand mothers ) So, manual is the ' normal' car . Automatics were more for very big sedans only, and viewed very negatively untill  recently and the arrival of dual clutch and now the modern automatics.

So now, special, in the view of many for a transmission on a car is : dual clutch and seen as young, fresh, modern . And they leave the manual for the grand parents Smiley

Many people who insist on manuals nowadays are grandmothers, who are afraid that automatics have their own mind and this may lead them to crash.

That definitely would be a very interesting alternative to the Turbo Cab.  I guess we will have to wait and see how close the 991 Targa's tub dimensions are to the 991 Turbo's tub to see if it is possible. This would make for a nice brand extension in 2015.

Correct, in the U.S nobody understands the allure of a manual transmission. I'll be buying my first car soon, and it will 100% be a manual.

Most people tell me that I'll be making a "big mistake", and only want a manual cause I want to "be cool" and "different". They also think it is stupid, outdated, and increases your chances of death...

The only people who really understand manuals these days drove them mainly in the 80's and 90's, actually enjoyed them, but are nowadays just don't have a desire and think autos are easier.

I'll keep my manual relics on the road even if I have to fabricate the replacement parts in my machine shop in the back of my cave...because us luddites are afraid of the steep, steep learning curve associated with a PDK type transmission and have cognitive impairments that prevent one from distinguishing "P" "N" "S" "M" "+" and "-".

With manual there's nothing to be cool about, you'll be focusing on the road and your surroundings, you won't have a chance to fiddle around with an iphone or pcm. I know I've been doing it in my GTS and seem to be busy pushing buttons more than keeping my eyes on the road Smiley

I've always felt that drivers of manuals were more aware of changing conditions in stop-and-go traffic and are less likely to have an accident for that very reason.

Re: 991 spyshots thread (continued) (for UNRELEASED models only) Thread Closed

I have driven manual cars for almost 50 years, and still have manual in my 1961 Super 90 Roadster.  But I can openly say I am sick of a clutch and shifter.  In around town driving a manual is a worry and a pain, especially on hills or in stop and go traffic.  I would not buy a new Porsche with a manual.

I also think that driving a PDK can be quite engaging, with both paddle or steering wheel shifts.  Hitting the right shift points, downshifting, etc., takes practice and skill.

    Each to his own...

Yes, to each, his own. Some still prefer a manual so the option should still be made available.

I would get the 991 facelift , expected as from summer 2015. The main changes amongst others will be, better looking DRLs, power equal to the present X51 and much improved e-steering.
