My Road to an S + Some spec choices including Wheels

Well I have paid the deposit.

Have flapped around for ages test driving all sorts of things - from Golf GTI, Mazda RX8, Nissan 350Z & Mercedes SLK 350. Put a deposit on new Mercedes SLK 280 (3L V6 - 231 HP).

Then I drove the Boxster and was impressed. I went back for another drive and the 2.7 was with a service customer. So I had a go in the S and wow. Wife was so impressed with the difference that she offered to pay the extra each month ! It totally smashed the SLK350 on driving enjoyment.

Originally just going to order a base S but can`t resist the options.

Ordered and have been told June build for July delivery :-

Atlas Grey / Black Hood. (Showroom car - Solihull / Dorridge OPC is this colour looks great)
    Black Full Leather
    Sport Seats
    Heated Seats
    Sport Steering Wheel
Bose (albeit reluctantly) - on basis that I would have to go for Porsche Sound for a decent sound and then Bose is "only" Pounds425 more (with wind deflector option) - Any views ?
I don`t need or want Sat Nav.
PASM - No - got to draw line somewhere.
Still undecided on CD changer - hoping to hook up Ipod at some point - could actually buy a dedicated shuffle or mini for less than changer option.

Now really cannot choose on the wheels.
I quite like the standard 18" S wheels BUT the 19" do give a better look. Saw the Carrera S wheels - nice. Pics of the Carrera classics look good. I am not fond of Sportdesigns but the salesman was raving about them - he had only seen them on one Boxster an Atlas Grey and he said they looked fantastic.

I drove the 2.7 with 19" wheels and 3.2 with 18" wheels - the ride was firmer but it was fine - in some ways it was nice to have more feel.

So Pounds1000 more for wheels or not ? If so which ones ?

I will probably take the car to a track a few times once it is run in and I am used to it. Does this affect wheel choice ?

Was going to order Stainless Steel tailpipe but salesman said it would not be twin pipes but one pipe with vertical division - I think that may be the 986 choice ?

Well never owned a car like this before - To put it in perspective I am moving up from an N reg 1.6 Escort ! Business doing well over last 15 months and wife tells me I should treat myself (Bless her!)

    Wanted to share my thoughts.

Any views on Wheels, Bose, CD changer & S/S tailpipe ?

    Karl

Re: My Road to an S + Some spec choices including Wheels

Karl, your spec sounds a lot like mine. I too had to draw the line with PASM and didn't want sat nav, but went for sports steering wheel, sports seats, heated seats, but no Bose (I've got some aftermarket audio gear I'd like to install). I went with the standard size wheels for handling reasons. The 19s look good, but the 18s look fine and less unsprung weight is better on what it, after all, a sports car.

    3 weeks to go!!!

Re: My Road to an S + Some spec choices including Wheels

I think that if you are going to listen to music a lot, you'd probably regret not going for the Bose. I think the others sound a little disappointing. But a lot of people seem to prefer listening to their engines instead!

I've specced Bose, no PCM (will get a Tom-Tom if I'm going to go to Europe), and am waiting for either an MP3 capable changer, or an iPod interface.

Tyres might be more available and cheaper on the 18s... (supply and demand) Anyone looked into that?

And I'm coming from a 1.6 Golf, so I know exactly what you mean. I'm starting to REALLY get the willies now about splashing out Pounds47k on a car with only two seats ..... But I'm sure I'll get over it pretty soon.

Re: My Road to an S + Some spec choices including Wheels

Good choices. Bose is a must IF you listen to a lot of music. The Porsche sound system is still pathetic (no rear speakers!). I don't have the 6CD changer and am not missing it at all (had it in my TT before). Can do without PASM. The 18" wheels should be just fine I would think. I have the 19" on my 987S because I bought my car of the lot (too impatient!) but am scared to even think about replacement costs after a track day. My original order just had the default 18" wheels. Regarding tailpipes, I'm really impartial as long as it's a double exhaust .

Congrats on ordering your Porsche. It should be good fun to drive!

Karl, congrats on the car, but more importantly, on such a great choice of spouse!

I read what your salesman said about the tailpipe, but the 2005 Tequipment online catalog clearly shows a dual pipe that looks identical to the standard one. So either you believe the catalog or your salesman.

If you're not satisfied with the standard stereo in the car (and many aren't) then the Bose is probably the right choice. The "Sound Package Plus" is underwhelming for its cost. For whatever reason, most posters seem to fall into the "I want the Bose" or "I only want to hear the exhaust/induction" camps. Which are you in?

The 19s are the same width as the 18s and may be slightly heavier in terms of unsprung mass, so there is little (no?) performance benefit to them. Hence wheels should best be decided based on whether you like their appearance. As with colors, photos help but seeing them "in the flesh" may make this an easy decision. The 19s would be easy to fit later if you decide you can't live without them, and I suppose you could keep a set of 18s for winter tires and 19s for summer tires.

Check out the full color wheel centers as they are a nice touch for almost all grey/silver/black color combos.

Anyway congrats on your car, now the terrible waiting begins!

Re: My Road to an S + Some spec choices including Wheels

I have specified colour wheel centres - sorry didn`t include it above.

Still can`t choose the wheels - tending towards the 19" Carrera Classics but don`t know how they will look on a darker car. I have seen pictures of them on artic & seal grey and they look good.

Atlas grey can look almost black and I don`t want the wheels to look too "street".

    Oh - I don`t know !

Your salesman doesn't have to clean them. I like both the Carrera S and Carrera Classic wheels. Both give visual drama. I'm not sure that the Classics are worth more money than the S wheels, they are expensive enough!
