    996TTS and 997T compared

A day ago, I took delivery of my 997T and it my 5th Turbo. I am keeping my '05 996TTS Cab so I thought some comparisons would be interesting to the forum. The 996 has been tuned with an Evolution Motorsports intake, diverter valve, GIAC ECU reprogramming, and an AWE Tuning exhaust. Not dynoed, but estimated 540 bhp. Sorry that performance comparos will have to wait til after the 997 break in period. First I will try and post some pics that compare the two styles. In my impression, the 997 appears lower, and is a bit more agressive looking with the flared hips and air intakes on the flares (more visible than the 996). Now let me see how to put up some pics.

    Re: 996TTS and 997T compared

I've never noticed this difference before....

    Re: 996TTS and 997T compared

That seems to be part of what makes the 997tt appear lower.

    Re: 996TTS and 997T compared

    Nice pictures.

The 997TT looks much more agressive yet sexier.

It's a big step up design wise, one of the best turbo, imo.

I like the stance of the 997

Looking foward your review after the breakin period.

    Re: 996TTS and 997T compared

    I love the changes.

    Re: 996TTS and 997T compared

whats the color of the 996TTS?

    Re: 996TTS and 997T compared

Its Cobalt Blue. Sorry, the color doesn't come out very well in the pictures. Its a really nice color.

    Re: 996TTS and 997T compared

First impressions of the handling (without pushing it due to breakin), is a significant change in the turn in/understeer I feel with the 996tt. The 997tt feels lighter on the turn in and much more eager to enter a turn. At first I thought it would go directly to "tail happy", but that was not the case. It reminded me of the active suspension in my F360 more than the 996tt. The feeling is more like being on rails (as in a train)or tracks. I am impressed after this short time with what Porsche has done on this aspect of the handling. Again, not at the limit or pushing, just initial driving impressions.

The front still tends to bounce a bit through rougher corners, but not enough to destabilize during the turn. I need to drive it some more, but my early impressions are that the 997tt "appears" to have a softer suspension, but is controlled in such a way as to not give away lateral control in a turn. This will take a bit of experimenting and getting used to. I am more familiar with track machines (Lola, Swift, Riley & Scott, etc.) on the one hand and performance street cars (Porsche, Ferrari, etc.) on the other hand. My initial impression is that Porsche has created a more active suspension a la Ferrari that appears to move towards the middle ground while keeping street comfort.

I am old enough to lose my teeth if I hit a pothole while in Sport mode, so I must pay attention to these things.

    Re: 996TTS and 997T compared

congrats on an excellent addition to a beautiful collection. The comparison after a few miles under your belt should be great

    Re: 996TTS and 997T compared

DJB, They are both beautiful cars. Is your 997TT Artic or GT Silver. I am going to go with one of these colors and would be interested in seeing any interior pics that you have so I can evaluate interior options. Thanks.

    Re: 996TTS and 997T compared

It is Arctic Silver with Stone Grey interior. I like the combination although some others may think it is staid. It is to be my "daily driver" and as such I like the understatement (but what lurks under the hood!). I did get the red seat belts and the yellow calipers add some color. I will take some pictures when its light tomorrow and put them here.

    Re: 996TTS and 997T compared

Thanks David...Just wondering do you look at the natural leather in grey? I looked at a sample at the dealer, but it did not look as dark to me as others have related on Rennteam. When you look at the samples in the 997TT brochure and also under the "build your own Porsche" section of the website it looks almost black. Just wondering if you have seen Natural Leather in Grey?

    Re: 996TTS and 997T compared

I only looked at samples and thought it was too dark for my tastes. So I went with the Stone Grey and am happy with it.

    Re: 996TTS and 997T compared

    DJB,

Lovely photos, great cars, both of them.

Great minds think alike (I'm also keeping my tuned 2005 996 TSCab as I await-via deposit-a 997TT...of some variation.).

    Nice writeup and pics, thanks.

    Re: 996TTS and 997T compared

    Thanks!!!
I enjoyed reading your handling and suspension comments.P seems to have reached another level of perfect compromise for this car

The pics show well the difference in the hips and the air intakes. So much more agressive!

    Re: 996TTS and 997T compared

Love the car(s). Congrats. Agreed, the 997 looks so much more aggressive. I look forward to the comparison tests.

    Re: 996TTS and 997T compared

Cool, Al. You will enjoy comparing. I must say there is nothing like a tuned 996S with the top down, but I can also say it is sitting in the garage a bit more as I am fascinated to experience the new handling characteristics of the 997tt. Do you have an estimated date yet?

    Cheers,
    David

It depends on what I choose. I am inclined to tune whichever 997TT I pick up. I will want to wait to see what Porsche does with their powerkit and S, as well as GT2, whether the powerkit/S use significantly different hardware or not, which could influence how the 997 tuning goes, and of course, I wish to give tuners time to develop products with a reputation for reliability. I originally planned to go with a TCab, but since I'll keep the 996TSCab, I might go with a TCoupe instead. All the more reason to obsessively follow the forum.

    Re: 996TTS and 997T compared

    Dave,

Sell me your cobalt blue 996TTS :-) That's my favorite color and I'm in the Tyson's area!

    Choices, choices...

    Re: 996TTS and 997T compared

Sorry Andrew, my plans are to ship it to Switzerland where I have an apartment so I have something to toodle around the alps and northern italy with. Its a great color, but not easy to find!

    Re: 996TTS and 997T compared

Here are some interior pics in different lighting and trying to show how the Stone Grey goes with the Artic Silver. INHO it is a classic, if somewhat sedate, combination that one never gets tired of. It also will not compete with my girlfriends hair color.
