I can't imagine that the sunroof adds enough weight to worry about. And I am fairly certain that you cannot delete it, because that would force Porsche to perform a totally redundant set of expensive crash tests to get it certified for the U.S. market. The ends don't justify the means, so everybody gets a sunroof. You can probably counteract the additional weight at the roof of the car by leaning your seat back 10 degrees.

Thanks guys. Seems silly that they make you recertify the car when you remove the sunroof. I would expect the roof to be sturdier, if anything, by not cutting a hole in the middle. The GT-3's come with no sunroof or back seat. So perhaps after the GT-3 gets certified, they'll offer sunroof delete on the Carrera. I'm assuming that they'll have to certify the GT-3 separately. Do they have to crash test each model?

I can't say with authority. I don't know. But whenever you change anything structurally on the car, it causes a domino-effect throughout the entire car. Sure, the roof may be sturdier, but does that affect the impact absorbsion qualities of the chassis adversely?? Yes, it's over-thinking, mental masturbation. But that's our government, and our lawyer-happy litigious society, in action.

Sunroof delete might be available in EU, not here though.
If you have ever dug into a car with a sunroof there are strong rails that run on each side and often along the front....basically framing it. I have seen non-sunroof cars that basically have nothing under the headliner.....just the sheet metal of the roof with small
reinforcement strips/beams. Sunroof cars still have these but they will often tie into the box-frame of the sunroof.
While a sunroof and its mechanisms may add a little weight, I don't know if rigidity is compromised all that much. I would tend to believe it was removed on the GT3 more as a weight savings more than anything. Would be interesting to know if the GT3 roof has any additional structure added.

Yes, no sunroof for me in my 997S 
... been there with the 996, done that, don't wan't it again.
As been mentioned already, it ends up creating rattles, makes too much noise and buffeting to use it in my normal "spirited" driving, adds weight right on the point furthest away form the car's centre of gravety, reduces headroom, and the car's roof line looks much better without it. But thats just my personal view, to each his own
