Kreso, I thought this has been in law for quite a while. All the tuning products must be certified (heck, our authorities demand a TüV certification and we aren't Germany). Declaring an upgrade to the insurance company is also required, but nobody practices it and it isn't enforced. However, the Germans are right for demanding it, as there are many vehicles which even in standard trim have brakes and suspension which barely suffice and then add an extra 30-50 bhp on top of that. A small and feeble JTD Punto can be tuned from 85 bhp to 130 with just a chip. It should be regulated and uprated brakes and suspension should be mandatory.

    Andrej,

    I support this German quest.

Why? There are too many illegal mods these days on the streets... Even in your and specially in my country...

Exactly! And I think tuning turbodiesels for an extra 30 bhp is the least of our problems. There are cars that have had engines replaced with those from more powerful models and on top of that tuned, but their brakes remain the same and the suspension is "lowered" (they cut their springs ). It really becomes a problem when they put a 450 bhp engine inside an old Ford Fiesta and then drive it on public roads .

...can you imagine Yugo with Lancia Delta Integrale engine tuned to 400hp!!!???

Some people really have idi0tic ideas...

Ha ha! Yeah, I can imagine it. I can also imagine it disintegrating on the highway .

Re: Germany going after aftermarket ECU tuning

Kreso you won't believe it, but last weekend I saw a tuned Dacia Logan on the Ring I've no clue about the mods in detail, but the car was sitting extremely low on fat tires It looked scary how this thing was pushed around the corners at crazy speed

PJ, depends on who the owner was. If he bought the Dacia as a cheap platform and then modified it (engine, suspension and brakes), that is very different compared to boy racers who just tune the heck out of their engines and race each other on public roads.

Re: Germany going after aftermarket ECU tuning

There is in fact a sport version of the logan....

If you enjoy sports cars I think it is very shortsighted to approve and endorse ever restrictive actions by governments, watch out all of those nasty , rich, arrogant Porsche drivers will be next! After all no one needs those high HP sports cars when a diesel Punto will get you everywhere you need to go!

Interesting - here is a pic of the Logan which I saw on NoS - indeed looks like a serious Ring-tool The driver also seems to share the typical humor of the Cologne guys - the number plates (translated into English) read: toilet

I've actually seen one! it was unbelievably fast and the guy that had it used it mainly for street races and, occasionally, for the drag strip...but it was insane!!!

I agree with the basic premise of your post, but the problem with some modified vehicles is that they are so shoddily built, that parts literally fly off them at high speeds (potentially injuring or killing bystanders), they lack the stopping power and are in violations of virtually every emissions standard in existance. Not something I would want to be driving next to in traffic.

Re: Germany going after aftermarket ECU tuning

I agree with the concept, there are so many rules to make cars safe you shouldn't be able to modify the HP so significantly without some type of inspection or certification.

But there are so many things that can be wrong in applying these rules. Not even sure it possible to enforce.

Some sort of inspection would be needed. Are the parts securely fastened so they don't fly off? Are the brakes uprated to handle the extra power? Is the suspension uprated to handle higher speeds? Those are the only things that truly matter and shouldn't threaten the modding community.
