    Remembering the 997.2 Turbo (S)

I recall quite a few members here had 997.2 TT's when they were new. I've recently been contemplating replacing my E63S with one as a daily driver. To me the 997-gen still remains the most attractively styled modern generation 911, it's usefully small in the city, and given my two kids are still pocket sized, I could actually use the back seats. The dogs would have to stay at home though.

I'd opt for the .2 Turbo S, as I'd want a PDK for a daily, and the S has all the goodies you'd want anyway. Would be happy to read about your experiences owning one at the time.

The E63 S might have been the best car I've ever owned, it really was without fault and exceeded all expectations for a DD. Regardless, every petrolhead wants a change of menu once in a while and trade-in with the current mileage is still attractive.

Re: Remembering the 997.2 Turbo (S)

Sounds like a great choice!  I still absolutely love my 997.1 manual with limited slip. I get why you would want the extra benefits of the .2. Lot of improvements.  I could not afford the upgrade at the time but I got a good deal on mine 11 years ago ($60k with 45 k miles) and now with 120 k miles it is worth at least what I paid for it ( not including what I put into it).  Lots of great use over the years. Wish I had more specific ownership experience to pass on here but I certainly know all about them from the perspective of always seeing it as the next step up.   Not interested in the 991 turbo cars.
PS the mezger engine has some issues related to water cooling if not addressed and of course has no DFI or PDK option. Thinking about going with new coil overs as my stock dampers are pretty worn out.

Manthey offers good suspension upgrades for the Turbo models, supposedly even adds comfort + 10-15 years advance in suspension tech.

Re: Remembering the 997.2 Turbo (S)

That sounds and looks fantastic but I bet it is way out of my budget.  I will try to find the B16 Bilsteins and perhaps some new mounts and drop links. Shooting for $4k installed. Never know when you need major repair money in the budget. In the past each time I ‘invest’ in extra performance I end up needing to pay for expensive unrelated repairs. Is it just me or do other see this frequently- in other aspects of life as well?

Re: Remembering the 997.2 Turbo (S)

Can’t comment on the metzer turbo but my 997.2 4S is as bulletproof as they come. We use it as our backup car when the others are in service and as a winter car. Never missed a beat. Did change the shocks and dampers for some lower ones as the oem are riding pretty high.

And still waiting on the Apple Carplay upgrade like they did with the 996…

I hear the same about the 997.2 TT, super reliable. That said, I recall Gnil’s PDK adventure with his 997.2, the risk is always there…

But with your luck in cars, what could possibly go wrong?

Re: Remembering the 997.2 Turbo (S)

One of my absolute favourites, 997.2 turbo S. What a great leap forward over the 997.1 turbo. I jumped from the .1 to the .2 and it was like a wow moment.

Re: Remembering the 997.2 Turbo (S)

I still got mine, it turned twelve years old this year and still absolutely love it.
I don't drive it very much (it has less than 20k km on the clock angry), but whenever I do, it's a treat.
It's relatively small, it's nimble, very subtle in comparison to other brands and yet more powerful than 99% of the rest of cars. And it looks classic, like a 911 should do and except for the navigation screen in the centre console has no electronic gimmicky in the cabin.

    I will never sell it.

BTW, this Manthey suspension upgrades mentioned above, is it worth a thought?

That is good to hear, I'm convinced the 997 will find its place as a sort of sweet spot for the modern 911, both for its size and its looks.

Regarding the suspension, what's worth to keep in mind is that you can benefit from 10+ years in suspension development when you upgrade. I have a set on my 996 RS and the body control it offers is brilliant, of course on a Turbo you'd be looking for a more comfort oriented setup but I'm the result would be remarkable.
