    Why no 996 C2S??

    Hi,
is there any reason known, why a C2 S-model didn't/doesn't get build??
I like the look of the C4S, but don't really like the awd...
    Greetings

    Re: Why no 996 C2S??

Justa guess, but I think PAG makes more on the C4S and probably didn't bother setting up production for a widebody C2..and since thisis the last 996 MY they probably.

I know how you feel about it though. I hada 98 993CS, or C2S and really enjoyed the look w/o the extra expense and extra weight.

Why don't you like the AWD?
I wish I had it on my E55 right now.

What happened to your E55 RC?

Nothing happened. I still drive it.
I just wish I had a 4WD system on this car.
The ESP coming on all the time is very annoying.
Turning it off makes the E55 the perfect drifter, something you don't want to happen in the city at 35 mph.

    Re: Why no 996 C2S??

    RC,
I feel the same exact way as you with the E55. Last week I got to drive my friend's on some good roads and came away very impressed, but with this much torque, it would be really nice to have the extra traction of a good AWD system(at least for us spirited drivers ) ESP is restrictive, AWD is enabling.

    Re: Why no 996 C2S??

I don't think you need awd on a rear-driven car. It's another addition of weight and cost and (as far as I heard, I've only driven a 2wd-996 so far) less fun to drive...
My actual car has awd, but I don't really need it (a car with (theoretical) offroading capabilities just makes no sense with 2wd)...

    Re: Why no 996 C2S??

    shneapfla,

I agree. On dry pavement a sports car doesn't need all wheel drive, top race cars don't have it, and I think it may cut down on fun. I don't see how opinions on an E55 apply to a 996, but I'll continue the comparison. One is a heavy sedan, the other, a lighter sports car. It seems to me that the main issue is how the car is set up. Is it predictable and tossable without awd, or do you need more traction when giving gas? I think that as a car's size increases, the ability to cope with a given power to weight ratio decreases (with a constant suspension and tire set up). For example, a 300 hp, 3000 pound car would probably need wider tires and a better suspension to handle as well as a 200 hp, 2000 pound car. AWD, while offering great unique performance benefits, can also be used as a patch to fix problems with traction that possibly could be solved by other means. Take an E55, give it monster tires (315 or larger in the rear) and a stiffer suspension (with lower ride height) and I bet it won't need awd quite as much. It's just that these things don't mesh with a classy sedan like an E55, so awd is a better solution. Massive tires and serious suspensions do work with sports cars. A 996 has less power and weighs less than an E55, yet has bigger rear tires. I don't think awd is needed nor do I prefer it on 996s, especially those with normally aspirated engines. Cons include weight and less power to driven wheels.

Tiff from the show Top Gear when he tested a TT talked of Audi's love of awd in a way that suggested that he thought that particular car would be better in rwd. I don't remember the exact quote, so correct me if I'm wrong.

My girlfriend's WRX is a fun awd car, and it works well on the racetrack. However, for me, pure sports cars and ultimate performance on a dry track require rwd.
