Caterham promises High Tech New Sports Car

Re: Caterham promises High Tech New Sports Car

    Thanks Gauss.

What do you think about this projekt - unusable like a Super7 or more like a Elise??

Re: Caterham promises High Tech New Sports Car

As I understand their business plans, they definitely want to be a serious brand, with serious road cars as opposed to enthusiast specials like the 7.

Great news, as far as I can see.

This is going to end in disaster; Tony Fernades doesn't have deep enough pockets to turn Caterham into a serious manufacturer.

He bought Caterham in desperation after he was sidelined from buying Lotus. His original aim was to set up the new Lotus F1 team with a view to buying Lotus Cars.

Fernandes was sidelined when Lotus Cars decided to go it alone and attempted to buy the F1 team from Fernades.

Rumours are Fernandes asked for an obscene amount of money and Lotus cars realized it was cheaper to buy the Renault F1 team and rebrand it as Lotus, this resulted in the subsequent court case about naming rights.

In the end I fear Fernandes will get bored when he realizes his F1 team is going nowhere and Caterham will end up going the same way as TVR. Sad :(

Re: Caterham promises High Tech New Sports Car

I'm also a bit sceptic I must admit. We shall see. The SP/300R that Caterham have developed in conjunction with Lola looks interesting. Although for the same price (maybe a tad more) I would rather consider the BAC Mono, which is even street legal. Though you lose the ability to have a passenger driver.

Whether Caterham will bring out a worthy and successful Elise successor (like so many others are currently hoping), I'm very doubtful but I will be following Caterham's plans and ambitions with interest. Time has moved on, and IMO, with today's strict emission and safety requirements, it will be extremely difficult for such a small manufacturer to find the right mixture of performance, weight, build quality (people are used to better standards today than in 1996 with the spartan plastic Elise), and affordability...Another thing that worries me is the fact, that Caterham have not experimented on many other designs over the last decades, though they have Tony Shute now on board, so that's good news for them. Of course I'm hoping that they will succeed, it will bring the competition forward.

btw, other manufactures are not sleeping either, Alfa Romeo, to name just one, is coming out with the 4C. I'm curious to see if the promised specs/stats will make it through the production.

Re: Caterham promises High Tech New Sports Car

I can see Caterham developing a new open chassis car similar to the Aerial Atom.
Let’s call it a Super 8, open chassis carbon fibre tub or aluminium space frame, mid-engine Renault V6 from the Clio to keep the F1 lineage.

Such a car would probably cost £40,000-£50,000 more if it were carbon fibre based. I think it would sell if it was developed properly.

But not in enough numbers to sustain a mid ranking formula one team, much less a front running one.

This doesn’t appear to be what Tony Fernandes has in mind though; he thinks he’s going to create a company that’s going to sell upwards of 2000 units a year. He stands more chance of beating Vettel in Suzuka than doing that.

Caterham have no experience building high volume cars and they certainly don’t have the facilities. Caterham isn’t a strong brand worldwide, it’s little know outside of a few car enthusiasts and trailing around at the back of the F1 grid isn’t going to do them any favours.
