997TT faster than 997GT3 on Nuerburgring

The most recent edition of German Powercar includes a test of the 997TT (standard tires) and the 997GT3 (Pilot Sport Cup tires). The test cars were driven by Kurt Thiim (a professional, well-known European race driver).

Interestingly, the 997TT was faster on the Nuerburgring GP circuit:

    997TT: 1:4081
    997GT3: 1.4157

The conclusion adds that the advantage of the 997TT would have been even larger on the optional Cup tires. Quite interesting result...

Re: 997TT faster than 997GT3 on Nuerburgring

less than 1 second... well within margins of error, even for a professional.

Re: 997TT faster than 997GT3 on Nuerburgring

Markus, there is something pretty strange about that times on Nuerburgring GP circuit...
Times achived by Sport Auto on Klein kurs of Hockenheim are telling us something completely different!
    997 GT3 1.11,7min(Michelin Cups)
    997 Turbo 1.13,7min(Standard tires)
    Gallardo 1.11,8min(old 500hp version, Corsa's)
BTW, new 520hp Gallardo with Corsa'a and optional Ceramic brakes time is 1.11,5min as you will find out in next few issues of Sport Auto.

You will not be very pleased with Sport Auto Supertest times both on Hockenheim and Nordschleife... Turbo is not faster on track then GT3. Sorry...

I guess it's all a problem of the magazine. German Powercar is a nice mag for high quality pics and sometimes interesting stories, but Powercar also belongs to the "Auto Zeitung"-family, which is a magazine that isn't well known for its correct data concerning test results.

    Are you kidding

1 second (in the hands of a pro and with the TT on standard tires) is a very surprising result...

On the other hand, Kurt Thiim is a very sound driver (I would even say a faster and more experienced driver than HvS) And Kurt Thiim did the test...

I agree, this is strange. However, the test results from the Kurt Thiim test are as they are... Everything seems to depend on the track then?

Wasn't it him who did the "famous" Corvette Z06 testdrive?

(don't want to hijack the thread, just curious )

The Gallardo/Z06 test? Yes, it was him.

Re: 997TT faster than 997GT3 on Nuerburgring

certain tracks tend to favor high HP cars vs "handling" cars. I would think the long NBR loop would be more indicative of real world handling than any short course

Plus the Turbo should be a easier car to take to it's limits. With average drivers the difference should be even bigger. (If the tests results can be 'trusted')
