CloseAnyone have any experience with the Range Rover Sport? Ive always had a coupe of sorts and Im days away from enjoying my new m3, but with the dog and house. I need an SUV. Ive always had a Ford F150 to take care of things like this, but thinking about getting something a little more refined. Hows the maintenance costs, ride, and overall quality? Ill be test driving one this weekend, but wanted to get your opinions.
I don't own one myself but a friend of mine owns one and it spends a lot of time in the shop. Don't know if it only happens to him or across the board. Besides its not as ample as you'd expect inside. Otoh I like the looks and its a very comfortable city ride, just not as fun to drive because it feels heavy and big.
Appreciate all the input, already confirming everything I thought. Would go for the x5m or cayenne but cant really spend over 70k. I know in the past they were just overpriced and broke down on the regular. I do like the styling of the 2010 models and I thought Id give one a drive.

It's true on a highway, the Jeep has never been for speed, but it CAN NOT be beat off road. It is the Zonda for that purpose.
I look at it this way, if I want to go fast and have a fun ride, I will drive the 928, If I am going on an errand or into a congested area, speed means nothing. The Jeep looks great, inside and out AND the tech and quality of the build for the price is amazing. I was reading it yesterday at Jeep. $30K for a fully loaded 4 door Wrangler Unlimited that has the best specs in the 4X4 world. They really have improved them recently.
I like the looks over all other SUV's too. The top RR being 2nd.
I love that rollbar and a roof that comes off, ability to go anywhere, even side airbags now and a stability system, PLUS 40K in your pocket vs. the RR sport. No way to justify the other SUV's except status which is a joke.
I have only driven the regular Range Rover (and remaining Land Rover models) and, as the RR Sport is based on the same chassis, cannot be compared to SUVs such as ML, X5 or Cayenne. For what they offer they might be a bit on the expensive side
What I do like about the brand is the dismissal of any sporty pretentions, the car is comfortable and relaxing and one of the very few where one does not intend to occupy the left lane but gets into a relaxing state of driving. The Sport version might make sense from a marketing point of view but, at least for me, does not fit to the core character of Land and Range Rover.

That's true, but then what is the point. If you want to do daily driving in luxury get an A8 or S600 or if you need to add ostentacious display of wealth a Bentley or Rolls.
The RR is a compromise, not as good as an S600 for luxury and not as good as a Jeep for SUV duty. Same line of thinking goes for mixing speed and SUV functions. I suppose the RR makes sense if you want those 2 functions and will only buy 1 vehicle.
Get the best. In this case it actually saves you money and looks great. The Wrangler Unlimited LOOKS GOOD. Its an icon and it makes a statement. You can go anywhere IF you have to.
And to the point of the thread - for the 70,000 budget you can have a fully loaded Jeep Rubicon Unlimited AND a new Camaro SS vs. 1 average range rover. Easy choice for me. Saw a yellow camaro drive by last night - sweet.
The Discovery is better off road racerx... The normal, big Rangie is not my cup of tea though; too vulgar and obese! On the other hamd, a Range Sport with its supercharged V8 is a good compromise between off road abilities and on road performance. Still, not the most reliable SUV in thwe world. If reliability is the most important factor, one has to buy a Land Cruiser.

Sure they are. The Terrain Response system, together with the lockable diffs, air suspension, vast ground clearance, clever 4WD system and off road tyres makes the Disco a devastating off road machine. It's even better than the venerable Defender!
The Rovers are nice but they just aren't up to the jeep in off-road capability (See below, See all the vids above)). Suspension travel, articulation, durability. PLus for an everyday family the Jeep is just more useful and can take the beating that kids and dogs will give it.
If you're picnicking with the queen, RR all the way, but otherwise Wrangler Unlimited.
Plus a few things to add, the Jeep has a Full Roll Bar that works and enhances the looks. The Jeep has better water fording. Lift kits and Large OFF road tires make the Jeep look even better and improve its abilities while such additions to the RR would look terrible. And airbag suspensions are just problems waiting to happen.
And don't forget you can pull as much of the roof off as you please with the Jeep or go soft top.
