    DI Update for 997TT/TTS

    Guys,

    Anyone hear of anything new re. DI and Porsche? I heard MB presented at Geneva their CLS 350 CGI with DI. Didn't MB back in the 1950's introduce DI to the production automobile-only more recently to be trumped by Audi? Is Porsche going to follow suit with DI for the 997TT variants? Or put it in the Cayenne, 987Coupe/Convertible? Or await the 998?

    Outside of fuel economy issues, this could also help performance, so it would make logical sense to apply it also to Porsche's "TOP" model-the 911Turbo.

    Hey Al,

    I was wondering about the DI but I guess since Gasoline in the U.S. contains too much Solfure it won't work.

    Yes, I remember reading that thread, but I wondered if there were still more to it than that. Perhaps not.

    Mitsubishi reintroduced gasoline direct injection several years before VW.
    They did so because they did not have Diesel engines (60% of sales in my country). GDI was marketed as a way to drop fuel consumption to the same ballpark as Diesel cars.

    In practice, the savings were nothing to write home about. Those engines were louder and polluted more as well. I think Mitsubishi eventually dropped them.
    They still managed to get Renault and VW to waste a ton of money into researching this so-far disappointing technology.

    We heard that the facelifted Cayenne will be the first Porsche model to be equipped with DI engines.

    Do you mean the base Cayenne (with the VW engine), or those with real Porsche engines?

    Cayenne Turbo S with DI and cosemtic surgery? Hmmm. Maybe I'll take the plunge and trade in my tuned Audi S4 for one-that would be my first SUV.

    BTW, I hear BMW is building a 3-series coupe with twin turbo's and DI in a 3.0L inline 6-the 335i (I think the M3 will get a NA 4.0L V8). They claim in their press kit that the DI also helps to minimize T-lag, presumably via the increase in compression ratio. I wonder if Steve Dinan plans to tune up the new M3 with a supercharged version? Any Bimmer aficionado's with knowledge?
