German carmag "Autobild" reports about RMS

AB reports in it's latest issue about the well known RMS-issue.

Headline "Ein schmieriges Problem" - "A smeary problem".

The article does not contain any real news (at least not for Rennteamers) but I thought it might be worth to mention the article anyway, as it might be the first coverage in a German carmag

    Here are the essentials:

AB claims to have detected the RMS problem
Article says that some "Porsche-specialists" (no exact source mentioned - they might have looked just into Rennteam or other internet forums ) say that 50% of the 996 3.4 L have been suffering from RMS leaks.

It is also mentioned that Porsche claims to have solved the issue by using another RMS since February 2005.
Only from now on - after AB has confronted Porsche with the issue - Porsche would not have the customers let pay for the RMS repair anymore (I thought that had been general Porsche policy before, maybe except for some cars with excessive mileage). Porsche would look into such cases again in order to decide whether to reimburse customers for any repair expenses.

For the German speaking Rennteamers you might have a look at the article's online version at http://www.autobild.de/aktuell/meldungen/artikel.php?artikel_id=10853

Re: German carmag "Autobild" reports about RMS

I wonder how many times they are willing to fix the same 996/986 having repeat RMS leaks?

Or if it is just one fix per customer?

    Don't forget the 997.

    Nor the 987.

From all the comments here on Rennteam, for the 997/987, it does not seem to be a large problem as with the 996/986. It seems with the 997/987, it is more the exception than the rule.

Re: German carmag "Autobild" reports about RMS

I think this article is great. Call me crazy, but I and others have theorized that Porsche has built-in engineering defects into their cars to maximize profits in the service bay. It is sickening that owners have had to pay for new engines when it was Porsche who is responible.

    Time will tell.

Please study some micro-economics and try again.

Porsche spends money on warranty repairs that include labor charges as well as replacement parts. Only if the repair is performed out of warranty do they make a little profit on the seal parts.

Every warranty repair probably loses them as much money as the profit on 50 sets of out-of-warranty parts. The dealers' labor charges are a large majority of the cost of either type of repair, in warranty, or not.

Porsche would be committing economic suicide to purposely plan for these RMS failures as income.
