Crashed/Damaged Aventadors Can't be fixed at dealers.

Flying doctors to treat damaged Lamborghini Aventadors

    Automotive News | February 28, 2011 - 1:10 pm EST

If you crash Lamborghini’s new V-12 Aventador and damage any of the carbon-fiber parts, the supercar won’t be repaired by the brand’s 29 U.S. dealerships.

Because the car, to be unveiled tonight in Geneva, will have a monocoque, or unibody, structure made of carbon fiber, Lamborghini will ship damaged Aventadors to a so-called flying doctor for repairs at a special center in Seattle.

Lamborghini will train and equip up to three flying doctors, one in the United States. These repair specialists will fix damaged Aventador exteriors. They will carry suitcases with heat-generating tools to reapply carbon fiber to damaged areas of the cars.

The Seattle center is at the University of Washington, where Lamborghini, Boeing Corp. and the university have teamed for carbon fiber research that helped in the development of the Aventador.

Traditional body repair won’t work on the Aventador because the monocoque and roof are a single component made of carbon fiber and resin. They are being made at a new $10 million facility at Lamborghini’s factory in Sant’Agata, Italy. The rear-engine lid and rear air scoops also are made of carbon fiber.

The new Aventador’s body-in-white -- which has an aluminum door, hood and front fenders, also is being made at the new facility.

The entire monocoque weights 324.5 pounds. Similar structures have been used for Formula One race cars and function like roll cages to protect occupants. The monocoque is connected to the front and rear end of the Aventador with aluminum subframes on which the suspension, engine and transmission are mounted.

The Aventador is the successor to the Murcielago supercar, which went out of production last spring. The Aventador costs $378,995, including shipping, and deliveries will begin this summer.

Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann says the first year’s production allocation for the United States is sold out.

I am not surprised one bit... Probably the same goes for the new McLaren too...Smiley

Well, performance has it's price... I am starting to dream again about the 911 more and more...

Re: Crashed/Damaged Aventadors Can't be fixed at dealers.

Same thing with the Audis. Only certain shops could work on the all aluminum bodies.

And if I remember, if you damaged more than a panel on the CGT - the whole kit had to be shipped back to Porsche for examination and repair of the carbon monocoque.

Re: Crashed/Damaged Aventadors Can't be fixed at dealers.

That's the thing with regular CFRP constructions; barely reparable.
If I recall correctly, the nrmal procedure is to remove the damaged area and the surroundings, reapply resin, and wet lay-up a patch in the created void.

This is with the normal CFRP constructions, that is with thermo-set resins. thermoplatics are being used as well (re-heat to make the resin soft, repair, cool down), but that is pretty rare.

In my line of work, everybody is closely watching boeing how they will deal with damages to their flagship, the 787 dreamliner, since it has an all carbon fuselage. How on earth are they going to repair the aircraft if for instance one of those mobile stairs runs into it? (happens more often than you maight think) Or are they just going to scrap the entire aircraft? Doesn't seem to be an option if you ask me...

What will happen is, if there is a crash the car will be quickly a total loss. Especially buyers of such supercars are demanding and secondly the cars are used on high speed, they need to function 100%!

Its just a matter of time until the guidelines, techniques and tools how to work with such material will be established

Re: Crashed/Damaged Aventadors Can't be fixed at dealers.

I actually do not understand why this is such an issue for you guys. It certainly is a different situation for Boeing as Joost mentioned above but that is a component of different size, price and, in my opinion, much higher risk of getting damaged. How often have you crashed a supercar that had damages to its chassis and were still able to repair it for a low price? Every body panel is replaceable so one would have to seriously damage the core chassis to be in need of any "flying doctor". Would I really care on a car that cost me hundrets of thousands to acquire?

Re: Crashed/Damaged Aventadors Can't be fixed at dealers.

I don't think they are only talking about major accidents. Even dents/scratches can't be repaired by dealers.

Re: Crashed/Damaged Aventadors Can't be fixed at dealers.

The same applies to all carbon fibre hypercars (McLaren F1, Ferrari Enzo, Pagani Zonda). I don't understand why it is such an issue now with the Aventador all of the sudden.

Well, carbon breakes and does not dent, so you don't have to worry about dents. Smiley

Scratches can be treated locally, provided they are skin deep and the carbon fibre panel hasn't been damaged.

Because those cars are of a much more limited production, people who own Zondas, McL F1, or Enzos have many other toys to indulge in. The Aventador is more mainstream and as such could be some costumers only sports car. If your only toy was taken away you'd be much more annoyed than if you have others to play with.

Re: Crashed/Damaged Aventadors Can't be fixed at dealers.

Emmanuel, I wouldn't call someone owning an Aventador, underpriviledged.  Surely, he could afford a 911 as his daily driver.

Trust me, not all of them.

A friend of mine got himself a nice used Murci for around 150,000USD. You can't buy a used Enzo or Zonda for less than 800k.

Exactly what I mean, not underprivileged by any means. But its just the kind of car a person can own as an only sports car, not just because you can't own another but maybe you don't want to either. The Murci line as well as the Aventador cover  all bases pretty well, but an enzo or zonda otoh are more specialty cars, they deliver a great deal of driving pleasure but they don't cover all your sports car needs.

Re: Crashed/Damaged Aventadors Can't be fixed at dealers.

I find a V12 Lambo pretty specialised. Not as hyper specialised as an Enzo or a Zonda might be of course but it's not an every day car by any stretch of imagination. Then again, who am I to judge how people think and act?  Smiley

The V12 Lambos are the most affordable hyper car in the market. Even maintenance costs is way cheaper than others.

lets put it this way. If you wake up one morning and say "i want to drive my Lambo today" you can probably go through your daily routine without many hassles. But if you say "I'm gonna take my Zonda for the day" you'll probably have a hard time in more than one spot.

But you're right everyone has a different view on this.
