    "The name is Mezger!"

    And not Metzger? Have I misspelled this famous Porsche engineer's name all this time? On a German Porsche forum no less? Smiley

    My source of the wrong name was this article on Autoweek and other forum postings.
    A little embarrassed, but a search for "Metzger" on this forum shows that I am in good company indeed. Even a German Porsche enthusiast and forum owner misspelled like I did. Smiley

    Hans Mezger (* 18. November 1929 in Stuttgart ) ist ein deutscher Ingenieur und ehemaliger Chef der Motorsportabteilung von Porsche . Mezger, Hans (* November 18th 1929 in Stuttgart) is a German engineer and former head of the motorsport division of Porsche.

    Nach einem Maschinenbau -Studium an der Universität Stuttgart arbeitete Mezger ab 1956 zunächst in der Versuchsabteilung von Porsche in Zuffenhausen. After a mechanical engineering studies at the University of Stuttgart Mezger worked from 1956, initially in the research department at Porsche in Zuffenhausen. Er war Ende der 1950er-Jahre beteiligt an der Entwicklung der Rennmotoren für die Formel 2 und des 1,5 Liter 8-Zylinders für die Formel 1 , der 1962 von Dan Gurney und Jo Bonnier gefahren wurde. He was at the end of the 1950s involved in the development of racing engines for Formula 2 and the 1.5-liter 8-cylinder for the Formula 1, which was driven in 1962 by Dan Gurney and Jo Bonnier.     1972 wurde Mezgers Abteilung im Zuge einer Reorganisation nach Weissach verlegt. Mezger 1972 was transferred as part of a reorganization under Section Weissach. The background is that due to the large cylinder bores of the Porsche 911 GT3, the walls between the individual cylinders for an aluminum engine block would be too thin.

    Mezger is a hereditary surname which is derived from the German word Metzger, which means butcher. There are several spelling variations for the name, such as Metzger, Metzeler, Metzler, Mezler, etc.

    FWIW, the Wikipedia entry is incorrect in so far as the engine block is not made of cast iron as it claims.

    But it did at least get the spelling of Hans Mezger's name right. Smiley

    bluelines, thanks for the explanation. Between Messrs. Mezger and Rohrl, I am having some anxiety trying to remember the order of placements of the alphabets. Not easy for non-Germans!

    fritz/Grant, if not cast iron, what is the block made of?

    So Mezger engine in 2008 Turbo's has aluminum block?
    Out of curiosity, what was the reason for the change to magnesium? And the change back to aluminum? TIA.

    Yes, the Turbo motor is all aluminum.  They changed to Magnesium for awhile, since it is much lighter.  They changed back when engine size grew, since Alu is stronger (Magesium motors tended to need more attention and modifications to keep them in tact).  Magnesium was also much more expensive for construction costs (but I love mine.  My gearbox case is Magnesium too - they all were from 1972 to 1977).

    Stuttgart. The former race and development engineer at Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Hans Mezger, will be celebrating his 80th birthday. On the subject of this celebration, Porsche development chairman Wolfgang Dürheimer said, “Hans Mezger is one of the most important engineers in our company’s history. For four decades, our racing cars won with engines designed by Hans Mezger and made the Porsche name a synonym for sports performance around the world.”

    Hans Mezger was born on November 18, 1929 in Besigheim, Swabia. After graduating from high school and studying machine design, he started at Porsche in 1956, working on engine development. The first of a long series of racing engines designed by him was the 1.5 liter eight cylinder engine used in the Porsche 804 Formula 1 racing car, in which Dan Gurney won the French Grand Prix in 1962. Over the next decade, Hans Mezger’s work ranged from the design of the legendary six cylinder boxer engine for the Porsche 911 to the development of the legendary Porsche turbo engines used in both production and racing cars. One particular highpoint was the air-cooled twelve cylinder engine for the Porsche 917, which produced up to 1,200 horsepower in the 1973 CanAm version.

    After developing so many successful racing cars, such as the Porsche 935, 936 and 956/962 models, Hans Mezger dedicated himself in the early 1980s to one particular customer commission: he designed the “TAG-Turbo made by Porsche” for the British racing team McLaren – a Formula 1 engine that produced up to 1,000 horsepower from a capacity of just 1.5 liters. From 1984 to 1986, the engine produced at the Porsche development center in Weissach dominated the elite class of motorsport and consequently landed three Formula 1 world championship titles.

    After more than 40 years at Porsche, Hans Mezger retired in 1994. However, he retained close links with the Porsche brand. He still owns a Porsche 911 Carrera and is always a very welcome guest at the new Porsche Museum. When Hans Mezger visits the racing cars and engines he designed which are exhibited there, history comes alive once more.

    ^^^ Porsche 1-2-3 finish at 1968 Daytona. I believe Mezger considers this among the highest points of Porsche Motorsports. You see this same finish in the Daytona video that Trev0006 just posted.
