I think it's a cosmoline type of protective covering.
I believe the factory does some selective coating to inhibit corrosion during the ocean crossing.
At least that's what I've been told.
Most likely can be removed w/ some sort degreasing agent.

That's what I hear too.
Just leave it alone. It will burn off or dry off or whatever: not worth your time to even be concerned about.

With a pressure washer, some mineral spirits, and a little elbow grease, it will come off, and your underside will look like this:
It is best to remove it when it is fresh. Cosmoline does not burn or wash off, it will just bake on, and after a while it will be almost impossible to remove.

I know this is off topic a bit but I'm looking at your picture and it appears that your car is in a state of suspended animation. I don't see jack stands or lifts. Am I missing something?
BTW: Love your undercarriage!
