    Stock boost

What kind of boost does a stock 996 turbo make or an x50 meausred in bar and what is bar in lbs of boost? Thanks

    Re: Stock boost

    1 bar = approx. 14.7 psi

The stock turbo has a max. boost of 0.7 bar and the X50 a boost of 0.8 bar - correct me if I'm mistaken.

It is actually more like max. 0.85 bar for the stock Turbo and 0.95 bar for the X50 (some literature states 0.8 and 0.9).

    Re: Stock boost

Well where do they get the extra horsepower the 100 or so I have read tuners say you pick up from a ecu upgrade, I just had my computer done by proto tech and my max boost is 1 bar so not much different than stock according to the responses to my question.

    Re: Stock boost

Also I forgot to mention my car is a gt2 which I assume is the same as an x50.
    Thanks for the responses

Boost pressure on the GT2 is around 0.05 bar higher than on the X50. I have the official technical specs somewhere, have to look them up to be sure. I'm getting old...

You got a ECU upgrade but boost pressure is still the same? Strange.
The GT2 we testdrove more than a year ago usually showed 0.9 bar on the boost gauge but very rare 1.0 bar too.
Another GT2 I testdrove this year showed 1.0 bar more often but the most comon reading was still 0.9 bar.
On my former 996 Turbo (stock, not X50) readings were varying from 0.6 to 0.8 bar.
My RS-Tuning tuned 543 HP Turbo showed 1.1 bar max. boost pressure, a friend's 569 HP Turbo shows up to 1.2 bar.
Both cars had modified turbo chargers, the 569 HP car had modified K24.
If you got a 30-40 HP upgrade on the GT2, 1.0 bar might be OK. But with real 100 HP more (which isn't possible using ECU upgrade only), it should definetely read more than 1.0 bar.
Last thing: the boost pressure gauge isn't always precise.

    Re: Stock boost

Maybe I mis worded what I meant I didn't mean I was supposed to pick up a100 hp from the computer, but I have seen claims that some ecu tuners pick up 90 to 100 hp and I was wondering did that come from an increase in boost only?
Proto Tech said I would have 540 hp from their ecu upgrade, air filter and exhaust, a gain of about 80 hp I guess. One of the reasons I picked Proto tech was they claim to have the worlds fastest street 911 turbo and I heard alot of good things about them. Getting back to the computer the reason I ask if all the hp is picked up just from turning up the boost why do they charge so much just to do that? As far as boost goes I really don't know how much I was making before the computer upgrade because I never realized I could check boost. I have a euro model and everything is written in german in the owners manual. I recently figured out how to pull boost up. The car feels brutally fast up top now but the boost gauge onlys shows 1 bar. Also Proto tech was one of the only tuners I spoke with that were conservative with their claims addressing such issues as intake restrictions and such allowing only so much hp with the stock intake no matter what you do, David at Proto Tech seemed very knowledgeable about the engines capabilities and limits in stock configuration. Also I haven't changed my exhaust yet either so I don't know if that will affect boost or not?

    The fastest 996 Turbo?
Does their car produce 700 HP and more?

To obtain "real" 543 HP out of a stock 996 Turbo without compromising emissions, you need the following:
    1. sport exhaust system with high flow cats.
    2. modified K16 with different impellers
    3. over-working of the exhaust manifolds and especially on some parts of the complete exhaust system
    4. sport air filter
    5. ECU reprogramming

With ECU reprogramming and sport exhaust with high flow cats, around "real" 500-510 HP are possible but only if you're using a very well programmed ECU software and a high quality exhaust system. You won't believe the difference in quality, especially regarding the exhaust systems.

I know that some Tuners claim wonders from ECU tuning only but I have to warn people that engine reliability and also emissions (important for some US states and Europe) can be severely compromised.

BTW: never heard of Proto Tech in Germany.

    Re: Stock boost

Actually Proto tech's fastest street 911 makes over 800hp.
Here is a list of the improvements my gt2 is receiving to get the 540hp.
    reprogrammed ecu
proto tech custom fabricated headers, in house
proto tech custom fabricated exhaust with hi flo cats
    hi flow air filter.
The fastest TT and specs are on Proto Tech website if interested.

This car would never be street legal over here...if anyone cares.
I'll check their products more carefully as soon as I find more time.

    Re: Stock boost

My X50 typically goes up to 0.9bar and switches to 1.0 from time to time for several seconds or so.

One question to RC: Assuming that X50 and GT2 max boost was slightly different (you mention 0.05bar), why do both cars offer the same max torque?
