Found a sheet metal screw in my tire

Last week I found a sheet metal screw in my front tire. The screw had not yet buried itself in the rubber. I took a screw driver and easily removed it. The way the screw came out it would appear that it do not penetrate the belts of the tire. After one week the tire has not lost any air pressure and it everythng seems to be ok.

I am debating whether to change the tire or leave it as is. I do a lot of spirited driving in the rural mountains of Vermont and New Hampshire and would hate to be caught with a flat, on the other hand, spending $1200 on new tires is not something I had planned on doing either.

I am no expert on tire construction, so I am aksing the questions, how obvious would it be if the screw penetrated the belts? The screw was about 1/4" long?

    Any thoughts?

Re: Found a sheet metal screw in my tire

I can sympathise. I've had two punctures from self tapping screws as a cause of construction work near my office. On the first occassion the PS2 tyre was fixed by a Michelin tyre centre. 3000km and no problems. on the second occassion I had a slow leak in a front tyre and the same Michelin centre tested the tyre, found the leak and again fixed it. By all means change the tyre for peace of mind however IMO you wont need to, just get it checked maybe.

Re: Found a sheet metal screw in my tire

No way I'd change that tire as you describe it. The belts are a woven basket so breaking a few strands (the width of a nail) well within the tread boundary aren't gonna phase me one bit. Except at Autobahn speeds, the tire's not enduring stress like the space shuttle or a commercial plane so in your case it's fine.

Keep in mind when they plug a tire they probably _break_ a few more strands in the steel belts. So yours has the fewest possible strand breaks that a "damaged" tire can possibly have.

On second thought: My bet is there're NO strands broken in your tire, probably just one or two of them are pushed out of alignment (bent).

Re: Found a sheet metal screw in my tire

i had the same thing happen on my club coupe, when it was two days old. Removed the screw and no leaks. There's really nothing to fix or worry about.

You'd be surprised at how deep a puncture must get to cause a leak. I once had an ABS failure issue with my 996 Turbo. I was going deep and hot into a corner on the track, and the wheels locked, but I thought I was sliding on oil, because brake lock isn't what I thought of. In any case I flat spotted the tires, all the way through the belts to the rubber underneath, and never lost tire pressure.

Often times, especially with tires with lots of tread, you get lucky and find the screw before it can work its way deep enough to be a flat. Other times, not.

This time you were fortunate. Don't worry, be happy.

Re: Found a sheet metal screw in my tire

I just replaced my two rear tires because the screw I had went all the way through, and I was loosing 1-2 lbs. per day. The tires had 9500 miles already, so I figure I only lost 1/3 of the $900 the pair was worth. I was reluctant to change just one side. However, I will hold off on the the fronts until they get another 5k or so miles on them.

If you're not loosing air, then I would guess (and I mean guess!) that the symptoms, if any, will start with a slow leak rather than a big bang.

Re: Found a sheet metal screw in my tire

Maybe too late to tell you this:

Keep old tires, have them patched professionlly, in the future you might have to or want to use them.

Re: Found a sheet metal screw in my tire

Definitely too late, but thanks for the thought. I probably would have ditched them anyway. I have the 'unfortune' of living in a roomy house and as a result have accumulated way too much stuff that I 'might' need someday - so I'm trying to cut back.

Yeah, definitely an art to tossing stuff. Big question I ask is: "What's the worst than can happen if I throw this out?" Most often the answer is, "Just buy a new one for less than $50," or "No big deal."

It's been a great help in allowing me to dump lots of baby pictures!!!

    (LOL, just kidding...)

Re: Found a sheet metal screw in my tire

never use a plug in a radial tire, especially never use one on tires as high performance or as expensive as those on Porsches.
Patches ONLY!! I am close to your neck of the woods, in plattsburgh ny, got my 07 GT3 here now!
get it checked, but if no leak most likely no problem.

Reasonable minds may differ on that point. A properly done plug holds just fine-the rational for stem patching (which is a combination of a plug and a patch)-is to seal the inside from moisture getting to the belts. That would be more important for tires which last 40 to 50 thousand miles. But as quickly as one blows through tires on 997's, less so.

I have plugged a few Porsche tires, with no issues, as have many others. It eliminates the need to dismount the tires (which by the way, is a rational for not repairing high performance tires because the dismount is hard on the internal integrity of the sidewall)
