Re: Question for GT3 owners: as a daily driver?

We can always do a swap if it doesn't work out - my stereo's fine!

Oh yes, the steering wheel on mine is on the wrong - read right - side...

I'm very envious of you - I hope you enjoy every minute - and congrats.

    SoS.

Re: Question for GT3 owners: as a daily driver?

Hehe, well SonOfStig, I don't know what you drive

I don't have much time in the GT3 yet, but so far so good. The more I drive it the more I love it and I've been to all my usual places w/ it so far and no problems w/ clearance over speed bumps, ramps, etc.

My wife is a little put off by how loud it is in the cabin but that's what I love about it! The car feels so alive. I keep pushing the car a little harder to try and explore its limits (in safe places of course) but there's so much grip. For me, it was the right call to give up the RS4 for the GT3. I'm so much happier driving this car even though the stereo is crap.

Re: Question for GT3 owners: as a daily driver?

I've had a GT3 since March and drive it whenever and wherever I want. The car is not my daily driver but I do drive it more than most. I would buy it again. I've had the C2s, twin turbo, and countless other Porsche's over the years. This is the best....by FAR.

    So far so good

Well, I've had my GT3 for two weeks now and so far so good. I love it!! Just figured I'd report back in case any others are going through a similar dilemma to what I was going through in terms of trying to decide.

    1) For me, it's easy to live with as a daily driver. I give up a lot of the creature comforts I'd get in a sports sedan (last car was RS4) or even a C2S, but it's more than worth it for what the GT3 gives back in return.

    2) We've already had plenty of rain here and I've had absolutely no problems driving the car. I had some concerns initially because of the forum chatter, but really, the car is fine in the rain. Actually, it's great in the rain and I look forward to the wet roads because I can test the limits at much lower speeds (obviously, I pick the right places and conditions to do so). I do have the Corsas and not the MPSCs so perhaps that's why the fearsome reputation of the GT3 in the rain.

    3) Only minor problems with the front splitter scrapping, etc. I actually had more problems with clearance on my RS4 (it had the Stasis motorsport suspension and was lowered) than with the GT3. The GT3 clears speed bumps just fine where I'd need to proceed VERY cautiously with the RS4.

All-in-all, the car was the right choice for me. Only complaints are the exceedingly bad stereo system (my car has the base unit, not the Sound Plus), lack of Bluetooth support for my phone, and there's a little bit of a buzz/rattle coming from within the dash somewhere when the road conditions are right and/or the engine is at a certain load.

Thanks again for all the advice. It was useful in helping me to decide.

    -Roland.

    Re: So far so good

I was very interested in your comments. What about the clutch? It's very stiff compared to mine. How is it in stop and go traffic? Is one thigh becoming bigger than the other?

    Re: So far so good

The clutch is heavy which is my preference which is why I didn't bother to mention it. If you're sitting at a stop light, you'll put the car in neutral versus just hold down the pedal w/ the car in gear. Funny, because when I got back into my RS4 after not driving it for a week, I thought the clutch had gone bad because the pedal just went right to the floor!! I hate the way the RS4 pedal feels now. It's too light and whimpy. In fact, I'm not even all that crazy about driving my RS4 anymore -- I hate to say that because I feel like I'm betraying a car I fell in love with -- but the only real benefits for me are better stereo and Bluetooth. The GT3 is just otherwise so much better. I think I would have felt the sameway bout the C2S. The RS4 is a great sport sedan but it is a compromise car and I have no reason to compromise (not kids, etc.), wife has sedan, etc. I'll be selling the RS4.

    Re: So far so good

Congrats on the car Roland, I've had mine for 8 months now as a daily driver & still love the car, it is the pick of the Porker range for driver involvement, without loosing much in refinement to the 997S... unless you floor it above 4500rpm!!!
The best single word to sum it up is....AWESOME!!!
If you aren't happy with the standard stereo (as you say its crap & we all like some music sometimes!) ask your official Porsche dealer to recommend an aftermarket specialist, don't go to some one who doesn't know Pork, I have seen plenty of problems caused by add on stereos, battery drains, alarm & tracker issues.. etc!
Hope you continue to enjoy the beast & what about some pictures!?

    Pictures

Here are some photos of my car. It's Basalt Black which is a color you don't find many photos of so hopefully folks will enjoy. When I saw this color on the GT3 at my local dealer (was being delivered to another customer) I called the Audi dealer and cancelled my R8 order

    Re: Pictures

    Beautiful car.

I have to say that your complaints - the stereo and a dash rattle, are making me think that you should have gotten a C2S. I think it's virtually impossible for a GT3 to remain rattle free. It is basically a race car. Try find one of those that doesn't have a rattle.

Your car is a track car for experienced drivers and it can also be driven on the street. It is not designed for the street, though it does cross over well.

Respect it. The "people say I'm a good driver" thing is always a red flag. People know sh*t. If you never have, you should definitely take some drivers ed on a track or at PSDS in Birmingham. GT3's have humbled (or worse) many a "terrific" driver. The car does have tremendous grip, but when it breaks, if the car is not set up perfectly, it may not do so progressively.

Jeremy Clarkson recently smashed a GT3 into a wall on Top Gear. Lots and lots of GT3's are smashed at the N'ring every week. Seattle driving conditions can be less than perfect. Please enjoy her in health.

    Re: Pictures

Hi Silver Bullet, these are just minor nits. The GT3 is the right car for me. No car is perfect and I was simply calling out the negatives. I'd much rather have a car that has a few rattles and a crappy stereo, than one that's less fun to drive. I've owned Porsches in the past and I know they can develop rattles, and I don't expect any different here.

I've been road racing cars for 7 years (club, E production) so I've got a little bit of experience under my belt. I'm no Hans Stuck but I can hold my own against the other club guys and generally grid up front.

I saw the Clarkson video, but I didn't need to see it to know these cars can bite; already 7 GT3s crashed at Pacific Raceways this year from what I've heard.

So far I'm very pleased with the car. I've pushed the car hard into some hairpins and find it surprisingly easy to manage when the rears start to break away. I look forward to taking it down to Portland for some track time come spring. It's an easy track to drive with lots of runoff in T3-7 so I'll be able to really explore the car's limits w/o too much fear of balling it up. Any recommendations on track day insurance? It's been a long time since I've taken a street car to the track and I understand the insurance companies have wised up to the whole DE thing.

    Re: Pictures

Roland the car looks fantastic, some great photos.
Don't accept rattles or a crap stereo times move on, the latest series GT3 is just as on good on road as on track & that is its main appeal.
Most 997 Gt3's have a a degree of vibration in the cabin 3-3500rpm, this is from that awesome engine, it sets my door vibrating slightly but soon passes & is part of the cars character. But a continuous rattle isn't so take it back to the dealer & get it fixed under warranty those things can drive you nuts!!!
Anyway minor stuff you have one hell of a car there, enjoy!

Re: Question for GT3 owners: as a daily driver?

The mark2 GT3 would be so much better as a dd with all those pdk, bose sound system, psm, dfi etc.

and I have seat in the new buckets, the feelings is in between cgt seats and a.s.seats. great for the gt3 as a dd imo.
