Is there any hope for a Tip at the track?

    Folks-

My wife races (used to be semi-pro), but got breast cancer, so her right arm is weak for shifting. So, I went ahead and bought my first Tip.

I remember Danny Murry, U.S. Porsche pro racer, saying that he preferred racing a Tip at the track, even if it is much heavier, because he could concentrate on the line better without the distraction of shifting.

Please help me - this will mostly be a street car, but I want to put in about 6 track weekends this year. I have had problems with suspension mods in the past with a 996 X50, which would have helped the weight issue.

Can anyone out there make suggestions? Should I flash the ECU and add an aftermarker (lighter exhaust)? Are there any weight saving measures (besides me losing 15 lbs)?

I have been driving a GT3, and am concerned about the weight difference and no rear axle differential lock.

RC- Do you have any suggestions as I believe you also have a Tip?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks - Gerry

    Gerry,

both my wife and I have tracked our 6spd TT and I can tell you all it needs is tires. Go out and get a set of 18's (or 19's if you have PCCB) and put on some Hoosier R6's (they come in 18" and 19" sizes). The car is fantastic at the track with no understeer issues. You will not need a tighter suspension than the PASM in Sport mode. I have a dedicated 2500 lb 400 hp 951 track car with 500-600# springs and the 997 is faster in the stock form. The transmission is going to be of no concern - the powerband is so wide that shifting is almost unnecessary

    A Tip is no slouch!!
I was amazed at how great a proformer they are.

Re: Is there any hope for a Tip at the track?

The handling is very neutral and athletic despite the weight. As a matter of fact, the weight is imperceptible - the car tracks like a much lighter car. There are no other "GT" cars that turn a ring time within 1 second of the "pure driving experience" 997 GT3. There are actually none on the list within 20-30 seconds of the GT3 time.

Porsche has done an excellent job giving us a dual personality and dual purpose car. I would bet that in the absence of professional drivers, most enthusiasts will be able to turn faster laps in the 997TT than in the competition

I would think you'd need a very different alignment setting (lots of negative camber - around 3 degrees minimum) to use the R6's without destroying the outside shoulder in short order, no?

Re: Is there any hope for a Tip at the track?

I run just over -3 deg camber on my track car. With the R6's on the 997tt, we took time to use a contact pyrometer to keep the temps even on the tires. After 5 30 minute sessions the outer shoulders looked great. Granted, track temps were low that day - 35F, so in the summer things might look worse.
