    997 expected servicing costs at 2006 prices

    Hi guys,

    I was looking, out of curiosity, into the kind of scheduled servicing costs I can expect to have to pay for my 997 C2S. Please click on "Attachment" above to see a pdf file of the document sent to me by a Porsche dealer in the UK.

    My car will be a 997 C2S with manual transmission, no PCCB, with tyre pressure monitoring (TPM). Obviously, the servicing schedule is cyclical by nature and I have looked at the picture over a period of 24 years since this is the likely period over which I am hoping to keep this car. (Please don't be shocked - not all people like to change their car every time a new model comes out). Also, please note that I have analysed the servicing schedule on the basis of each 2 year period elapsing since I am unlikely to drive as much as 10000 miles per year.

    As such, when I analysed the servicing price list, this is my projection at 2006 prices (inc VAT) of what I will have to pay for my particular vehicle:

    Yr2: Change brake fluid (Pounds113), minor service (Pounds402). Total: Pounds515
    Yr4: Change brake fluid (Pounds113), major service (Pounds499), replace spark plugs (Pounds163), replace tyre sealant on TPM (Pounds36), check drive belt (Pounds12). Total: Pounds823
    Yr6: Change brake fluid (Pounds113), minor service (Pounds402), replace drive belt (Pounds62). Total: Pounds577
    Yr8: Change brake fluid (Pounds113), major service (Pounds499), replace spark plugs (Pounds163), replace tyre sealant on TPM (Pounds36). Total: Pounds811
    Yr10: Change brake fluid (Pounds113), minor service (Pounds402), check drive belt (Pounds37). Total: Pounds552
    Yr12: Change brake fluid (Pounds113), major service (Pounds499), replace spark plugs (Pounds163), replace tyre sealant on TPM (Pounds36), replace drive belt (Pounds38), change manual transmission oil (Pounds91). Total: Pounds940
    Yr14: Change brake fluid (Pounds113), minor service (Pounds402). Total: Pounds515
    Yr16: Change brake fluid (Pounds113), major service (Pounds499), replace spark plugs (Pounds163), replace tyre sealant on TPM (Pounds36), check drive belt (Pounds12). Total: Pounds823
    Yr18: Change brake fluid (Pounds113), minor service (Pounds402), replace drive belt (Pounds62). Total: Pounds577
    Yr20: Change brake fluid (Pounds113), major service (Pounds499), replace spark plugs (Pounds163), replace tyre sealant on TPM (Pounds36). Total: Pounds811
    Yr22: Change brake fluid (Pounds113), minor service (Pounds402), check drive belt (Pounds37). Total: Pounds552
    Yr24: Change brake fluid (Pounds113), major service (Pounds499), replace spark plugs (Pounds163), replace tyre sealant on TPM (Pounds36), replace drive belt (Pounds38), change manual transmission oil (Pounds91). Total: Pounds940

    This works out to be a total of Pounds8436 over 24 years = Pounds351.50 per annum. Not that bad for a high performance sportscar but a good deal more than it costs to maintain a typical BMW or a Mercedes.

    PLUS, there are the following items:

    Front brake pads only: Pounds495
    Front brake pads and front brake discs: Pounds903
    Rear brake pads only: Pounds356
    Rear brake pads and rear brake discs: Pounds743
    Geometry check and adjustment: Pounds222
    Replacement windscreen wiper blades: Pounds42
    Replacement battery: Pounds230

    The items that seem really overpriced are 'brake pad only' changes, geometry check and adjustment, replacement wiper blades (at Pounds42!!) and a new battery at Pounds230!!).

    PLUS there is the cost of replacement tyres. I have heard that, as a rule of thumb for a 911, you change the rear tyres twice as often as you change the front tyres and that annual tyre changes are normal. So, that's about another Pounds1200 for a full set.

    The following thoughts occurred to me:

    1) How do these UK prices compare with servicing costs in your part of the world? (Please note: labour costs in the UK are ridiculously high).

    2) Do these costs reflect your real experiences of 997 ownership so far?

    3) How do these costs compare (generally) with running other premium cars?

    if you worry so much about the cost, maybe you shouldn't buy a porsche. Or maybe, you try to figure out what cost what so you don't get ripped off by your dealer.

    Anyway, I can get a new battery (for mercedes E class) for the price of your wipers

    You should never get a new battery from a dealer. There are plenty of shops to get them for half the price. Tires are the same. There are usually way more expensive at dealers. Basically, all you should do at a dealer is maintenance. For everything else, it will be cheaper else where but you loose the convenience of just dropping the car for maintenance and get everything done at once.

    Also, a quick tip: to read the pdf more easily, when it opens in Adobe Reader, just click on "View", then go down to "Rotate View" and highlight "Counterclockwise".

    Lastly, the biggest question of all, how does the service interval indicator in the car interract with all the above? Does what it says one should do simply take priority over everything else??

    I can afford all the above costs comfortably, thank you, so I am not 'worried' but, as a responsible man with a wife and family to support, I like to know what costs I'm letting myself in for in the future. After all, every pleasure has its price and simply adopting a carefree attitude to money is unwise.

    Yep - 21 days till I am due to fly to Stuttgart. The waiting is really tough. Somehow, I am hanging in there!

    Well said, 911 ownership is available at many levels, doesn't mean that you shoud be blase about it.

    Good luck with the next few days, the wait gets harder but is well worth it in the end, especially if this is your first 911. Don't forget the Rennteam picture posting rules.

    my porsche parts/service rule of thumb has been think about what you think it's worth, then to avoid being pissed off at the cost later, multiply by 4. you will be close.

    I think it's very reasonable to look at servicing costs prior to jumping in. I know that I looked at simple things like brake pads (Pccb vice steel) before I made my choices.

    I don't worry at all about routine maintenance costs. I mean you wanna play you gotta pay, right?

    I worry about two other related things:

    1. routine maint. IS DONE CORRECTLY THE FIRST TIME.


    2. I start crying like a little girl thinking about NON-ROUTINE/non-warrentied MAINT COST.

    E.G. Cost of a blown set of piston rings (the ones that have been creating the uneven soot since delivery).

    Cost of some freeking electronic/software/electrical gremlin the day after warrenty runs out.

    Cost of repair because I do the stupidest thing in my entire life and set parking brake wrong and car rolls down driveway into tree etc... . Even IF covered by insurance you still have a f-ed up car on your hands.

    I agree. I can live with all of the stuff under warranty but the thought of something major going wrong afterwards is a worry-hence the great trade dealers do in extended warranty at GBP1000 per year....

    I'm so sorry, I didn't meant to be rude or to offend you. I wrote that post pretty fast. I should have read it twice but I was busy with a customers hotline because I ordered by internet an lcd monitor that cost me a lot and the thing is already broken. I guess a bit of my frustration got into the post I wrote. Again, sorry for that.

    It's always a good idea to check maintenace cost before buying. It's just that you even checked the price of wipers, wich is a bit going too far in my opinion. That said, I'll never be rich enough to get such car without looking very closely at the price list.

    You're gonna get your car soon and once you'll be behind the wheel , you will probably forget about all those servicing costs pretty fast

    I had the same sort of feelings before I took delivery of my car. After driving a few miles, all the hesitation and attempt to rationalize the spending spree disappeared (it hurts a bit more if you pay full amount in cash).

    Now, I'm thinking about the next automobile, and I'm doing the same sort of calculations that easy_rider911 is doing (F430 operation cost vs. Gallardo). But what the hell? These autmobiles are pure bliss. 100% worth the cost of indulgence.

    Need to also consider out-of-warranty repair costs on PASM/PSM, replacement costs of airbags (which have ?10yr lifespan), etc....

    IMO, today's cars are best compared to cell phones/PCs/PDAs/iPods/plasma TVs....don't view any of these tech-intensive goods as offering a usable lifespan of more than 2-3 yrs before obsolescence occurs.....and certainly don't consider any repair costs on these warrantied/disposable tech goods....

    Don't know how cheap lease plans are in UK, but I'd suspect ultimately "cheapest" way to drive a tech-relevant 911 is prob to $0 down lease a 997S for a 3 yr, ?45K mi lease (or buy new 997S w/a 2-3 yrs ownership period)....fully covered under factory warranty (not some dubious extended warranty), minim mtce costs and roll into another new, latest-gen 911 at end of lease to begin process again....

    My sense is some 70%+ of $100K+ new cars in US are leased, so concept of disposable, rapidly obsolescent cars has been embraced by the typical ?45yo buyer base, let alone younger, more tech-oriented buyers who prob "get" this disposable approach more readily....

    Actually, I only included the wipers because they are listed in that pdf attachment I posted.

    Thanks for the kind wishes. Yes, the waiting is really tough right now. I am both suffering horribly and feeling overwhelmed with unbearable excitement all at the same time. I think it's especially bad since this is my first P.

    Anyway, can we all move away from the issue of whether I was right to do this analysis and/or whether I did it just to kill time while I am waiting for my car? In actual fact, I would have done this kind of analysis even after purchase anyway! I did it when I got the servicing price list - that's all.

    So, does anybody have any views on the issues I raised? Thanks!

    24 years is a long time to own the same car - I thought the UK extended warranty for Porsches cannot be applied to cars over 10 years old, i.e. you would have to go elsewhere for your warranty?

    I agree with VKSF's opinion, and probably the older these modern cars get the more problems and costs you are likely to face?

    I had heard that a basic oil and filter change would run about $250 at the dealer, and that the tires, if I'm lucky, would last two years and cost about $1,400 - 1,600 to replace (I've got the Continentals). I came up with a wild-*ss guess of about $2000 - 3000 per year on average. In years requiring major work, I expect to spend $5,000 - 6,000 for major items.

    Like you, Easy Rider, I expect to keep mine a long time. In fact, if I happen to "check out" sooner than expected, I'm going to leave the car in my will to my brother. So like you, I'm in it for the long run.
