    short shift

I recently drove a friends 997tt cab which was fitted with short shift, an option I did not specify on my tt. I was very impressed with the manner in which it enhanced the driving experience. Does anyone know whether I would be ablt to get a retro fit on my car or have I lost the chance to have this fitted.

    Re: short shift

You definitely can have it retrofitted to yours. Check with your dealership about that. For a short time Porsche stopped offering the SSK as a factory option leaving owners with no choice but to have dealerships install the SSK for them. So they definitely can do it for you.

    Re: short shift

Extremely easy to retrofit, although the part seems to be an identical (color different) copy to a part made by B&M shifters, priced times 2.

This is a very easy and very common modification, DIY with common hand tools instructions included, or can be done at a dealer for no more than 1-2 hours labour charge.

Suggest buying the parts online as always, and then fitting through venue of your choice, always cheaper that way.

There should be a step-by-step illustrated 997 short shifter DIY hack somewhere on the net by now... .

Oh, probably at the B&M website!

Anybody know the link for adam456?

    Re: short shift

Thanks guys I will look into this. I must say without attempting to argue with any rennteamers who have purchased cabs, i do not fel as though the tt looks it's best with the hood down. I am talking pure aesthetics here, and it is only my humble opinion, some cars look great with the roof down, the tt in my opinion is not one of those cars.

    Re: short shift

The B&M instructions are not correct for the 07's. The shifter boot does not just lift out as a single piece. The leather boot must be lifted out of the silver trim piece then the screws holding the silver trim piece can be exposed and removed. If you follow their instructions, you will break the pieces and start crying like I did

    Re: short shift

    adam,
I've fitted the b and m short shift (available from e bay for a shade under 50 pounds)on my 987s. The 987 and 997 have identical gear lever assemblies and part numbers. Comparing my short shift the the original porsche unit there is virtually no difference in design or feel when fitted , the b and m is slightly less notchy to select reverse. The porsche oem unit can be retro fitted and the part costs about 260 pounds , but this is a replacement selector mechanism rather than just the lever.

    Re: short shift

Just wondering does the short shift weight less than the standard shift?

    Re: short shift

I doubt it will make any difference to the performance. The postage may be cheaper though.
