    997 GT3 Speculation

    Le Chef's post got me thinking that there is an awful lot of refinement in the 997 -- which is good in traffic and on long drives -- but maybe it needs a bit more edge, not necessarily objective performance, just more of the traditional 911 experience. I've never driven an 996 GT3, but I am wondering how the experience stacks up there (i.e., could one live with the suspension on an everyday basis?), as well as what the new GT3 may have to offer. Any chance Porsche will ditch the variable ratio steering on the new GT3 and give it a weightier feel? Maybe Colin Chapman was right, sports car owners don't want their cars to be perfect; they want something to complain about, to tinker with, and to ignite their desire for something else.

    Well, you certainly understand minimalism with the Morgan I think you could easily drive the GT3 on the street comfortably (I drove one and it felt like a Cadillac compared to my 911). Just need to be careful with driveways and the like with the low spoiler...

    Yeah, the Morgan is quite archaic, kind of like a biplane masquerading as a car. Actually, I managed to drive a GT3 this afternoon. My dealer has an 04 with around 5k miles and he let me take it for a drive as a comparison. I was impressed with the immediate steering, which is truly very quick. Just don't sneeze at 80mph. The clutch was very heavy in comparison to the 997. I didn't press the car really hard, besides a little braking, but I think the 997S in sport mode seems to stack up pretty well, obviously not in quite the same league but closer than I thought, and much nicer to behold inside and out. Frankly, I expected a bit more quickness in a straight line out of the GT3, but I reckon the new one will be a bit quicker. I'll certainly have to drive one before I pass it up for certain. With the 997S, I'm thinking 20-30 more hp, better sounding exhaust, and stiffer springs might a better alternative to the GT3.

    The Gt3 doesn't really seem very fast, unless you really get on it with the revs. Until 6k it's not much different that a 996, but then it gets going pretty hard til 8,200 rpm. Unless you wind it out, you'll never get a true taste...
