    Nice, Kreso!  Have to say I'm a little concerned about the effect of the driver selectable steering ratio.  Hope that doesn't feel like BMW Dynamic Steering...

    Edit:  Just read the Pistonheads article you linked and seems my concerns about the Dynamic Steering were well founded.  I wish they had stayed with Hydraulic (and kept the lovely gated manual as an option).

    Automakers are eking out every drop of fuel to increase the ever tightening fuel economy and emission standards imposed on the them.  As a result hydraulic steering systems which constantly consume power, and hence increase fuel consumption, are being replaced by the electrically assisted systems.  You may recall that many journalist have a different opinion of the dynamic steering system found on the Aventador SV so there remains hope.

    Dynamic Steering is an option. Standard steering is fixed rate electric steering system which I find superior overall to Dynamic Steering.

    Biggest concern is the fact that Audi sells R8 V10 Plus with Magnetic Ride as standard in Austria and that also covers my market. Standard conventional Sport Plus suspension is way more superior and lighter then Magnetic Ride. Really do not understand those degenerics at Porsche Austria (a company that sells VAG cars in Austria, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Croatia). So, we do not deserve the most sporty R8 V10 Plus suspension and if we want it I need to pay more and buy the car in Germany?

    Dynamic Steering is an option. Standard steering is fixed rate electric steering system which I find superior overall to Dynamic Steering.

     Yes, I'm sure that is an improvement over Dynamic (but not as nice as last generation).

    While that is often given as the justification, it's really not that simple.  A hydraulic system where the pump is driven by a small electric motor rather than the engine would save just as much fuel as EPS (this is what McLaren road cars and Porsche race cars do).  Also, this approach lets you spin the hydraulic pump quickly at low road speeds for more assist and less at high speeds as varying assist is needed (a crankshaft-driven pump gives the opposite of what is needed).

    I think it's more about the expense of such a system than fuel economy.  If Porsche made such a system optional, I would gladly pay for it to offset their small additional cost of production.  Call it "Power Steering Plus" instead of the current option that lets you park with your pinkie finger.

    Not quite correct as when the steering wheel isn't moved from center, the electric motor is not engaged. In your setup, the electrical motor is constantly engaged to power the hydraulic pump.

    Unfortunately, see BMW's EfficientDynamics system as the extreme case of maximizing fuel economy.  The automakers will take any route to (1) meet the standards and (2) lower costs.

    Here is McLaren's system:

    "The MP4-12C uses rack-and-pinion steering, and McLaren engineers told me they wanted to use hydraulic power steering for its superior feel. But electric power steering would have helped engine-bay packaging and parasitic power loss by eliminating the belt-driven pump, the belt hardware itself and the need for long hose runs.

    To get both benefits, McLaren fitted this electric-driven hydraulic pump (black), which feeds the rack directly via short lines (yellow). This, then ,is electro-hydraulic or electric-over-hydraulic power steering, and it's the best of both worlds."

    Of course, Porsche's hydraulic steering in the 997 GT3 was even better tuned after decades of refinement than the McLaren's so the difference is not that stark when comparing a Mac to a new Porsche with EPS.

    I know that there are other solutions available but VAG collectively has made a decision to go this route.  Fuel economy is one significant factor affecting that decision and standardization across platforms is probably another.

    I would think cost (which is related to standardization across platforms) is a far more significant varriable than the fuel economy benefit over a solution like Mclaren's.

    It is Porshce's own chosen solution for all of its factory race cars (where cost and standardization are not as relevant).  Fuel economy is more important in racing that those other variables.
