    GT3 Diagnosis

    Picked up my GT3 on Fri.
    There is a rattling noise coming from deep in the engine bay on the driver side.
    Only comes on at 2000rpm, stops at 2100rpm.
    Car had 49km on it.

    Dealer has it now and is checking it.

    Anyone have any idea what it is? Other than that car runs awesome.

    Does it happen when you only go around corners or in a straight line?

    It only occurs at 2000rpm to 2100rpm.
    And it occurs at standstill and while driving.
    Turning doesn't really matter.
    What did you have in mind?

    The differential can make a slight rattling sound at slow speeds when turning through a corner. Since it happens when you are at standstill and moving straight, that is not it.
    The induction butterfly moves and this might change sound for a second, but this is not supposed to happen until about 2500rpm.
    I will listen to mine at that rpm at standstill and see if i can hear it.

    The car has to be fully warmed up.
    The noise actually gets more prominent the longer the car has been running.

    Once your vehicle is fully warmed up. Stop, and run the throttle to exactly 2000rpm, thats when I hear it, my dealer says it is just teh variolift system.

    Sounds like intake resonance/noise. On the GT3 cup car, without interior and sound deadening material, it is about 2-3 times as loud.

    Yeah that's what my dealer said.
    There's nothing wrong with it.
    He says its the variolift thats "causing" it.

    No Variolift on the GT3

    Maybe your dealer means something else. The GT3 engine has variocam and varioram but does not have variable valve lift. The 996TT does have variable valve lift, but, the GT3 does not.

    The GT3 has Variocam and the Turbo has Variocam Plus.

    Porsche explains both:

    "The new 911 GT3 features VarioCam variable valve timing on the intake side based on engine speed and load. Exclusively developed and patented by Porsche, this highly effective technology uses a rotary vane adjuster on each intake camshaft to enable stepless adjustment of intake valve opening and closing. VarioCam differentiates between changing engine loads and seamlessly adapting valve timing to meet the actual performance requirements with the aid of the engine management system. As well as enhancing power and torque, the system offers smoother performance, improved fuel economy and fewer exhaust emissions across virtually all of the engine rev range."



    "VarioCam Plus uses a combination of variable valve timing and variable valve lift on the intake side to improve power, torque and fuel consumption across the entire engine speed range. Essentially, the system offers two engines in one: the first for low-speed and urban use, and the second for maximum performance. Despite the enormous difference between these two configurations, VarioCam Plus is able to switch seamlessly between modes thanks to the latest in electronic engine management technology. The variable valve lift system consists of adjustable valve lifters actuated by an electro-hydraulic switching valve. The valve lifters in turn comprise two tappets arranged one inside the other, which can be locked together using a hydraulically actuated shaft. The inner tappet is in contact with a smaller cam lobe, the outer tappet with a larger cam lobe. With two different cam contours accommodated on the camshaft, it is possible for two different cams, and therefore two different valve lift curves, to be applied. Intake valve timing is advanced or retarded using a geared camshaft adjuster. This adjuster is also actuated by electro-hydraulic means."
