    992 vs 996 film! ENJOY!

I hope you enjoy this one! What changed in 17 years? Is a new 911 always better?

Yes. The 996 is a crap machine, sorry to say this. I had one of the first worldwide, a 996 Carrera 2, what a disaster. This car spent so much time at my dealership, then over 10 days at Weissach directly, no kidding. Quality was really bad, many electrical issues, PCM was a catastrophe, the software programmers would get a kick in their a.. from me if I ever had the chance to meet them. Smiley Siemens (if I remember correctly)...later on, Porsche had their own people...I think. Got a 996 Carrera 4 Powerkit afterwards, I thought it would be better and it was, no real issues...until the day I noticed a weird driving behaviour at a speed of over 260 kph in an Autobahn curve and later on a black rear rim (covered in brake dust) after which I went to the dealership. "Funny" reason: One of the screws of the rear stabilizer bar had broken, I was lucky this car had ESP, otherwise I would probably be dead by now. Smiley

The 996 Turbo, later tuned by RS Tuning to my specs (incl. a liquid gearbox cooling system, one mass flywheel, coilover kit, GT2 intercoolers and other goodies), was an amazing fun car and track machine. Loved it, so fast. Had to switch it for a E55 AMG family car. Smiley

Bottom line is: I do not miss the 996 at all, ugly front lights, tail lights weren't much prettier and the quality was... Smiley The 996 Turbo was a pleasant surprise but even here, I had issues: Tire issues. The delivered PZero tires had...cracks. Seriously. It took a Pirelli engineer coming to my dealership and new tires to solve this problem. Pretty annoying.

No, no 996 for me. Never again. This car is not a classic, it is a water cooled abomination of the 993. Smiley The next quality 911 started with the 997 and I loved my first 997, the 997 Carrera S with PCCB and 20 mm sport chassis. Had again the first car, didn't regret it though. No issues (only some PCCB squeaking), exchanged it with a 997 Turbo later on.

Am I alone in not feeling much love for 997? My C2S was - OK, but 991 is a night and day improvement in quality, performance, agility, comfort, sound and reliability (notwithstanding my first Friday 991!) I'm not really convinced my 997 was much of a step up from my 996 - I think both interiors have dated horribly - and given the 3.8 engine issues and massive volume sold, I'm not convinced it'll be much of classic in the coming years. (perhaps it's just me?yes)

996 and 997 are very similar under the skin.  But many of the 996 issues were addressed with 997.2 (the Carrera engines are much more reliable beginning then).

Yes - 997.2 DFI engines & PDK a big improvement, but visually - I think they screwed up the facelift with the twinkle lights. 997 Turbo always looked hideous to my eyes.

I agree, the 991 was actually the "best" 911 Porsche made and even with the bi-turbo in the 991.2, it got better.

I like the 992 but not the front, it is as if they did have development money for the rear part only. Smiley I know the front will be addressed with the facelift (this time, the other way around, front more than rear) but still...

The 997 was the first water cooled 911 I actually liked but it certainly wasn't perfect, not even the 997.2.

Re: 992 vs 996 film! ENJOY!

Interesting discussion, I bought a 2016 991 GTS and spent a ton of money thinking this will be a car that I would keep for the long term. After the first couple of months I was disappointed with my car - the car was a big improvement in terms of handling and interior comfort, but it drove like a Mercedes C Class. The fun was gone. To have some fun I had to drive too aggressively and risked accumulating speed tickets.  I sold it with 1,100 miles. The exhaust was a joke with all of the fake backfires.

I started looking for a 997.2 and luckily I found a 2012 997.2 GTS, hydraulic steering, manual transmission, PCCB and Natural Red leather. My only disappointment was the Sport Exhaust - it is too quiet. But I'm happy and driving it a lot, and enjoying every minute. I'm lucky that there are very nice roads with plenty of twisty corners close to where I live. In the end this is the car that I will hold on to for a long time.

    To each their own!

I agree on the fake backfires. I stopped driving my previous 991 GTS in Sport mode because I could not stand the embarrassing sound. In Normal mode it was too muted. Sigh.

Re: 992 vs 996 film! ENJOY!

The 991.1 GTS has no backfires on normal mode with PSE on, so you still get the atmospheric PSE sound without backfires. In sport mode you get backfires if you keep the PSE on, but they are not as bad as in the 991.2 which was setup to produce them more frequently for some reason which was ridiculous. Still, I prefer no backfires at all in sport mode, forces me to use sport mode with PSE ON only in the open road and avoid it in urban areas because the backfires are embarrassing imo.

The 997 with PSE has some backfires but there were natural ones limited to some limited situations like severe overrun in 2nd gear and weren't as loud as in the 991, so those were fine.

Re: 992 vs 996 film! ENJOY!

I was on the 996 hating side, but once I got one which was the 996 GT2, all of my previous negativities about the generaton faded. What I used to hate about the car such as design, I now enjoy the most as it makes it unique from all the rest of the 911. I now have 4x 996 as a result (they're such good value in comparison to the other 911)

The other thing I noticed was that the car still has a great sense of occasion when you drive them. They aren't nearly as refined as the 997. For instance, the 996 MK1 GT3 CS makes the 996 3RS feel like comfy daily driver in comparison and the 996 3RS, does the same to the 997 3RS 4.0.

A very different era of car!
